Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

My center stand on my 2000 LT just collapsed with me on it as I rolled forward to get going. I am OK (just @@###!!). The bike fell over on it's right side. Only other damage I can see is the rear brake lever is bent, which I know how to fix. I will get the center stand re-welded with the gussets that Saddleman mentions in a previous thread if still available. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. (I plan to take the bike to a dealer that I trust to do the work and hopefully I can give him the gussets and some meaningful suggestions in order that the job can be efficiently completed).

Re: Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

Yikes! I always wondered about the strength of the center and side stand. I sometimes use the foot peg to mount the bike when it's on the side stand to help get my leg over the back rest. I might have to rethink that procedure.

Glad you're okay. I've only dropped the bike once, but luckily, I was standing next to it, not sitting on it.

Most important you OK
With regards fix how about getting your hands on a center stand from another bike that has been retrofitted to a trike.
My thought is 2000lt the metal must have undergone metal fatigue so reinforcing might be less preferred than replacing. Then the replacement could be strengthened with the gussets before putting onto the bike. Well just my thought.

Habit
I am 6' 1" and have wondered the same thing especially after reading the thread Captain mentioned of failed CS. These machines are pretty big/heavy. So my first concern before mounting is to put the least weight on the side stand or center stand. Again because of my height I easily accomplish this without the use of the pegs.
If I am boarding a passenger, my wife (she is quite petite) I straddle the bike first get it off either stand, flat-foot and let her mount using my shoulder for leverage so her foot peg is spared 80-90 pounds pressure. But hopefully for both of us peg does not fail. I guess periodic inspection of stands and pegs is the only way to go.

Re: Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

Bill, thanks for the response. I agree that the best solution would be to get a new center stand (or a slightly used one from a trike, etc.) and have gussets welded to it, but would be the most costly solution. If some other member has had experience with the reinforced, re-welded center stand I would like to know. The question that comes to my mind is obvious, would my re-welded, gusseted center stand be any less effective than a new one with gussets?.

Also thanks to socaltrailrider for the previous posted response. Yes I agree that you should not be in the habit of mounting the LT from the foot peg while on the center stand.

Re: Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

Dave Selvig (saddleman) has several posts on how he reinforced his center stand. Looks like a lot more of these are starting to fail. Time to post a warning for this along with the old brake lines. These old girls are aging and starting to have parts fail.

Re: Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

CS on my 99 failed at about 120k, had it welded, no gussets, and still functioning at 187k. I have a used CS that has never been broken if anyone wants to make an offer.

Re: Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

The gussets I had made are laser cut & you can use the gussets to align the broken part for welding.

Re: Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

I watched a 2003LT center stand calapse . I TIG welded it with gussets . That was a year ago and still holding up with a 325 LB rider. If you are going to weld repair , pull the 4 bolts an leave the center / side mount bracket assy. togather for the straightning / welding . You will have to tie the bike down like it is on a trailer while the assembly is off to be repaired.

14 years on an OEM center stand! I'd install another one, and call it good.

So did the broken center stand force it to one side? I can see this catching you off guard, I surly wouldn't be expecting it.

Re: Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

Gruivis - I pushed my LT forward to start moving and in an instant the bike was over on it's right side. I managed to get my right foot out of the way (just quick reflex I guess) before the 800 lb beast came crashing down. The only damage, besides short of a heart attack, was a bent right rear brake pedal and of course the center stand. My first thought before I saw all the damage was that I must have pushed the bike to the right instead of ahead and thought that after all the miles I put on her I am beginning to loose it. Well, not yet. With the help of 2 forum members I have contacted, one that will supply me with gussets, and the other with a center stand, I'll have her up (literally) and running soon. Thanks for the concern. Haven't gotten any sympathy from BMW yet, should I hold my breath? In all seriousness, thanks to fellow members for your help and understanding.

Re: Center Stand Collapsed I am OK

It must be the season for broken center stands,I had mine break on my2003 .i don't pull my down while sitting on it so it did not drop but I could feel it heavy to one side. I pulled it off welded it and put it back on. No worries!
