EHCS - electric motor
I've been faffing around with my stands for a couple of months now. I've refilled the oil a couple of times in the past, but this time I thought I'd do a proper job and hopefully it'll last for a few years. So far, I've had all the heavy bits powder-coated, which look great, and I've rebuilt the hydraulic jack with new seals and piston courtesy of John Z.
However, when I hook it all up, it's dead. I'm getting 12V at the motor socket (and the battery is good). I removed the motor from the pump and tried it on its own - it didn't turn initially, but when I manually span it it started running, but very quickly everything got v hot and a puff of smoke emerged from within.. Even 5 minutes later, when I stripped it, there was still enough heat in the windings to make it almost too hot to pick up.
Admittedly the commutator was a bit greasy and dirty, but I'm thinking that if that was shorting out the bushes, the coils wouldn't get hot, right? I measured about 0.8 Ohm between each opposite pair of commutator bars. Is that right? That should give me about 15 amps, which seems high but not horrendous. I'm not sure what would be expected.
If I need a new motor, could someone give me the specs to search for (or a UK supplier) please?
