Curious ABS symptom after flushing?

I flushed and bled my 2005 K1200LT using the Integral brake procedure. When finished, I have a nice hard pedal and handbrake lever, but only when the pump is on.

But with the switch off, the front brake handle seems noticeably softer, the rear pedal not so much softer. Unfortunately I never checked the brake stiffness before starting out.

Does anyone have an LT like mine with a soft hand lever when there is no electrical power to the ABS?

If that is a power assist ABS where you hear servos run when you apply the brakes, the soft lever/pedal is normal with the ignition off.

You should notice a different feel and clicking down in the ABS unit as you pull as hard as you can. But it should stop at a point and not feel mushy.

Re: Curious ABS symptom after flushing?

Wow! The two National BMW experts! (Do you guys ever sleep?)

Yes, it is the power assist version where the pump runs whenever either brake is engaged. I somehow have never noticed the hand lever difference switch-on vs switch-off. Must be why the procedure suggested a qualitative feel check before breaking into the system.

I still have plenty of DOT 4 and easy setup to bleed the calipers some more FWIW.

Thanks guys!

Just checking, did you bleed all four,
from handle bar to pump and then (key on) from pump to calipers
also rear reservoir to pump and then (key on) pump to rear caliper

Lets define the farthest-in tap as #1, and closest tap to LHside as number 6. Then the tall taps are numbers 2 and 5.

I bled the three front control circuit taps first #1, then #4, then #2, then back to #1
for a second burp.

Likewise I bled three taps for the rear control circuit starting with #6 (closest to LH side), then #3, then the tall one at number five which again is the closest tall one to the LH side, then returned for final burp at #6 the closest one. Does this make sense?

I have a home brew rig which feeds both power circuits simultaneously. It is still connected.
