Question Buckets

I'm about to run my valves and I'd like to know where I might purchase the buckets I might need. I'm sure I'll need a couple....................

Re: Buckets

Well the buckets will cost you $21.90 each if you get them from the dealer. There are 15 different sizes, so you could buy all 15 for $328.50 but even then you might not have enough of 1 size to adjust all that are out of spec. Best to measure all the valve clearances, keep good notes and then buy what size bucket you need or ask the members here if they have what you need. The odds that your local dealer will have the size you need sitting on a shelf are slim to none. So if you need to replace any buckets it will be at least a few days before you could have the bike running again.

I really do like screw adjusters. Ya, they need to be checked more often but you can do the job quickly not needing to wait for shims or in this case buckets to come from the dealer. On my Moto Guzzi Norge which has a full fairing, the valves can be adjusted in just 20 minutes and not a single piece of bodywork needs to come off to do it.

Wow I remember when they were $12.00. But I have never purchased one. Many of us have a "bucket bank" and will gladly send off what you need if we have it. So once you figure out what you need, put it in a post here.

Re: Buckets

Well, I got my front shock installed this morning and I tore into the engine to check the valve clearance. All the valves are in specs except for the two intake valves on #1 cylinder. They are reading .005 on both. That's just .001 too tight. Does that warrant further teardown to change those two buckets?

I changed mine that were on the tight limit or below it. I can't say you have to, but I would. Burning the valves and/or seats can be expensive. And on the LT, most of the work is getting to the valves. Pulling the cams isn't that much more work. The only part I found tricky was getting the pin in to hold the tensioner. I didn't get it right at first and knew instantly when I removed the first drive gear and had the chain pull it into the housing.

Fortunately, a week later I was able to easily press the chain guide down with a large screwdriver and install the pin correctly. Assembly was quite easy then. I approached the job with so e trepidation the first time, it my concerns were largely unfounded. Will be much easier next time around.

Re: Buckets

The buckets I pulled are .00280 so I should need two .00275 buckets. That will make it a little loose. Right?...........

Nope, puts it right in the middle at .007. 2.70 would put you at .009

I'll stick them in a padded envelope and mail them tomorrow. When you get them just send me your old ones to go into the pool and throw in a few bucks for postage.

Not to take away from the thread, but how did you guys manage with the storm? I was in our EOC today and noticed some rough stuff passing over your way. I hope all is well.

Re: Buckets

Bow echo was close, just to the north. Lots of trees down in the neighborhood but no damage here.

Re: Buckets

Are the buckets factory installed all the same thickness? Or do I need to pull the cam shaft to determine what each bucket is?

Re: Buckets

The buckets are different sizes. You have to pull the cam and take the bucket out and look at the stamp on the inside...........
