ABS Relay Fault Code

Back story, the ABS was working perfectly (no errors) until a rough railroad crossing was traversed at highway speeds. The ABS lights immediately illuminated and alternated with their on/off flash.

Today, I took my 2000 LT to the local dealer with what I hoped would be a simple ABS fault code reset. I wasn't so fortunate. I was informed there was an ABS Relay fault code that wouldn't clear. A $137 relay plus labor MAY fix the ABS error indication.

Now the question. Is there a procedure to short the ABS relay into an operational state?

Cheers,

Rob Lightner

Re: ABS Relay Fault Code

No there is not if you did the ABS motor would run constantly and drain your battery even while you were driving. This is a very cheap repair compared to the $2,000 + for the entire ABS unit. Now in view of the fact that this occurred after a jolt to the bike it could be a connector came loose on the ABS relay and re-seating it could clear the error. The dealer did not try this since it does take a bit of work to get to the relay. You have to break the motor cover on the ABS unit to get it off and then loosen the entire unit to move it far enough to get to the relay.

Re: ABS Relay Fault Code

Thanks John. I'll let the dealer work the problem and save a future problem of this nature for a winter project. It's spring and I want to ride.

Re: ABS Relay Fault Code

The good part about your problem is the bikes brakes are fine to ride with you just don't have the ABS function so watch the slippery stuff.
