CB install help with antenna ideas

I just got a J&M CB model 2003. It comes with a nice antenna. As all of you know. Antennas aren't the easiest to mount due to the weird antenna mount. So. Has anyone come up with an alternative or am I stuck having Fabricate something or to buy the BMW CB mount and mast for $200.00 +

I bought one that is designed for through-the-glass use and installed it just above the right saddle-bag trim and just in front of the rear corner. Works fine and the mast bumps the vinyl trim around the speaker.

Re: CB install help with antenna ideas

Look around for a used OEM mount. Awhile back I posted on this forum that I was looking for one. Sure enough, a member of the forum had one and I bought it. I had to get creative with the coax and mounting of the Frances' antenna, but it has the "stock look" about it and works perfectly.

I bit the bullet and bought the BMW mount and mast as I wanted to match the existing radio antenna. Expensive, yes, but looks nice and no point in putting a scab on an expensive machine just to save $200. Might find a used one and save some money and still have the factory look.

Re: CB install help with antenna ideas

I made a mount from a commercial CB mount I had found. It was a flat plate about 10 inches long with a rounded end. I took a chance that it was 5052 aluminum and that I could bend it. It was and this is the end result. That last one it what it started out as.

Re: CB install help with antenna ideas

That's exactly what I had in mind. I got T6511 aluminum flat stock at work 1/4" thick or 1/8" Just don't know if I can bend it without cracking. The mount you used. Did you have to drill the bolt holes? Or did you get that lucky that they lined up?

My specialty is not materials, but I think that may not bend with out cracks. Try a piece and see. I do know that some will bend smoothly and some will show stress cracks in the radius. My engineering handbook is in my desk at work and I am at home for a while.

I'm going to try flat stock steel. Any guess the thickness of your bracket?

Re: CB install help with antenna ideas

My aluminum was 3/16 thick but I would try a piece of aluminum from your work first before it went with steel. If you do go with steel 1/8 would most likely work best.
