won't back up incline

Well this is a new one for me. I always back the LT into the shed up a pretty good incline and never have any problems but today it would not make the incline in one move. It would start up and then stop and the R light would flash and it would not move. I finally got it into the shed after quite struggle. After doing a search I'm inclined to believe it's the "reverse speed sensor". Just wanted to run it by the collective to see if I'm on the right track.
The bike is an "02".

Thanks

Re: won't back up incline

If it only backs up a few feet and stops it is the speed sensor.

Re: won't back up incline

Thanks John, that's what thought also. The hard part is I only back up short distance to start up incline. It's always made the climb no problem before, I guess I'll check the wiring for the sensor as I had the right side plate off a few weeks ago and may have pinch the wires. I hope that's it that sensor is expensive.

Re: won't back up incline

Hi Pat,

That's a known issue and expensive to fix. I just lived with mine for a few years. Just keep thumbing the button and it backs up a couple of feet to a yard each time. Frustrating but you eventually get there!

Re: won't back up incline

Hi Kevin.
Yes it is an expensive part ($167.00) I just hope it cures the problem as I back up the ramp to the shed every nite. Never had a problem before, but the bike is 12 years old things break I guess.
Good time to do brake fluid flush while I wait for the speed sensor to arrive, never waste an opportunity to do maintenance while you have side panels.

Re: won't back up incline

Just an update on my reverse problem. It was the reverse speed sensor on the tranny, $167 later and all is well.

At least I put the downtime to good use doing a brake fluid flush and a valve check while I waited for the sensor to be delivered.
