5TH GEAR SLIP

Riding yesterday, and noticed the clutch slip in 5th at open throttle while passing a semi. (first time I noticed anything)

Bike has about 78,000 miles on it, so I assume that it going to need a clutch soon. The question is HOW SOON??

Leaving Fort Myers, FL to Kansas City area on Monday. Its about 1,5000 miles. You guys think I will make it that far without doing any harm to the bike??

Thanks for any opinions.

Don't know about harming the bike but " 1,5000 miles" I'm pretty sure you will over shoot KC

Have you ever replaced the clutch slave cyl. ?

No way to know. Depends on why it is failing. Mine slipped similarly once last summer. Hasn't done it again in more than 2,000 miles. I plan to take it on a 4,000 mile ride to Nova Scotia this summer. Have bought the key parts and tools for the repair that will be needed soon most likely.

You likely won't hurt it by riding it. Just a matter of your risk tolerance for a break down. If mine dies on the NS trip, I will try to sell it on the spot and buy something else to complete my trip.

Well, isn't that special...

Unfortunately, buying a new motorcycle "on the spot" is not an option for most people.

It also baffles me why you would go on a 4000 mile trip with a slipping clutch... when the parts to repair it are sitting in your garage.

I have ridden bikes and driven cars with a slipping clutch 10,000 or more miles before replacing it, you just have to drive like an ol' grandpa. If you keep flooring it hard in a high gear, and slipping the clutch hard, yes you can hurt the bike by heating up the whole assembly so hot that it burns up seals.

My last bike I sold with a slipping clutch, I just had to stop the drag racing and wheelies

I've replaced two wet clutches on two different LTs, drilled the weep whole on the third before even getting to that point this time. Having ridden on a wet clutch on the LT, I would not make a 1500 mile trip without repairing it first.

My question to you, is can you afford to get stalled on the side of the road? Once it starts to slip in 5th at hard power it is just a matter of time until it is slipping in all gears. DAMHIK.

Get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?

I was addressing Chris' question about whether he should make a trip having had one slop incident. I let him know I had something similar happen and then nothing for 2,000 or so more miles. I am willing to take the risk of making a long trip in this situation, but I also have a plan B in case the bike become un-rideable on the trip. He has to make his own judgement based on his risk tolerance and plan B options.

Since you obviously lack reading comprehension, I will spell it out for you so maybe you won't be so baffled. I don't call a clutch that slipped one time 6 months and 2,000 miles ago a "slipping clutch." And I don't have have ALL of the parts on hand to fix it. I have the tools such as the alignment tool, torque angle meter and specialized parts like the o-ring that others have recommended here. I won't buy the other parts until I have the bike part and see what is needed. Any less baffled? Probably not...

You should be ok. Just pay attention and make sure it's not slipping as you ride normally. They start slipping in fifth gear under full torque and then work themselves down the torque/gear scale. Might be a good time to get some towing insurance though. If you have synthetic oil in the motor, consider changing back to regular. That can reduce the seepage onto the clutch if it's from the motor and not the clutch slave. Also make sure your fingers are off the clutch lever unless you are shifting. It's real easy to pressurize the hydraulics and not know it.

Mine slipped in 5th the first time in June of that year and I made several more trips and waited until winter to fix it. This was based on the fact that I could only induce a slip in 5th once, if I tried to do it again it wouldn't until 20 minutes or so then it would do it once only. There was no slip age under normal riding conditions. When I opened her up she was dry and very near the wear limit but had not reached it yet. Judgement call.

I rode Dallas to SoCal and back twice after my clutch started to slip. Was not a full-time slip, however.

That said, I was lucky. YMMV

Well......

Depends on why its slipping in the first place. Transmission seal? Engine rear main, clutch slave cylinder or is the clutch worn out?

None are good. Just in the final stages of replacing my clutch. 45,000 miles and the slave cylinder got me. Not an especially hard job just time consuming. Helps a lot if you have the right tools too, especially the clutch alignment tool.

Me, I wouldn't chance it. But if you have a back up plan, like a credit card, cell phone and ready to rent a uhaul, then go for it.

Thought I would let you all know that I'm on the Kansas side of Saint Louis, and NO PROBLEMS, and no 5th gear slip. Another 250 miles I am home free.

By the way, I went by the Chatanoogan Hotel (hooked on Phonics) and it nice....really nice. Looking forward to the next CCR.
