Going on the Lift Tomorrow for a Rear Drive Failure Repair

My rear drive, not the bikes. I go in for a decompressive laminectomy L4-S1 that will hopefully allow me to walk normal again and feel my feet. I can barely throw a leg over a bike right now. If all goes well Monday I should be home Tuesday. I will most likely be a bit groggy for a few day so I may not be up to my usual posts for a few days. But then the good news is the recovery period is one where I can't do much except lay around and walk. It will give me a chance to edit all my videos from the CCR trip and some maintenance raw video I have shot recently. I'll be back as Arnold said.

All prayers greatly appreciated. Pray for John's recovery and my surviving his recovery. It will all be worth it if we can get back on the LT again and hit the road!

Re: Going on the Lift Tomorrow for a Rear Drive Failure Repair

All the best luck on your surgery. Once you get on the other side of it, the best advice is to follow the doctors instructions on aftercare. I've had Rotator cuff and Cervical spine surgery. Hopefully, after a week or so you'll feel better and want to move around more. This is the danger point! If the doctor says don't lift or bend or anything else, DON'T. If during your recovery, you feel a tweek or some discomfort, you will kicking yourself wondering it's related to doing too much too soon and did I mess up the surgery. Be patient.
Again, best of luck to you.

Wink Re: Going on the Lift Tomorrow for a Rear Drive Failure Repair

Good Luck with the procedure John! And from a vet of two times under the knife for an L4-L5 procedure I can say that it was most certainly worth it! And the progress they have made with the procedures over the years is absolutely amazing! My first time was in 1975 and that was the old fashioned way with the actual scalpel in hand. It took me over two weeks of hydro-physical therapy before I could even stand up on my own!

Then, 20 years later it flared up again and in 1995 I was actually able to get out of the hospital bed a mere 3 hours after the procedure and walk! What a difference 20 years made! And here we are almost 20 years later! I think you will be amazed at what a difference it will make for you!

Best of luck with the surgery tomorrow. I had the same 2/28/13 and was back riding in less than three months. Hope you are as fortunate .

Will do, Tell John to do as the Doctors tell him to do... I had my L5 -S1 worked on around 15 years ago. It took we a few times of trying to do too much, before I fully understood the Doctors were right.

+1. Following surgery, I was told to DO NOTHING for a said period of time. I was feeling a LOT better prior to end of "said period", and thusly decided to replace the headlight on the LT. Let's just say, "Set me back a bit"...

Good luck, and you'll be shooting hoops at CCR!

One too many final drives pulled,eh?

Bets of luck John, another that's been there for similar.
Enjoy your rest period, its worth doing not much for short time you need to recover to be able to ride again (and do many other things without pain).

Looking forward to some more good videos.

May your 'maintenance session' be a success! And, speaking from experience, if they recommend rehab, go for it. AND follow the recommendations of the rehab techs. Can greatly enhance recovery. PATIENCE may be required. tho.

Heal well and soundly.

John,

After I gave you my best wishes for a speedy recovery a thought hit me that I would hope being Wrencher Extrodinaire that they would use a quality American or at least German made lift and not strap you to one of those Harbour freight jobs.
Trying to keep your humor up John as nothing heals like a good laugh.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery John! And be sure to make notes on the tools used so we can make our own and have a tech session at CCR!

Good luck John! In spite of your abilities to work out DYI procedures, be sure the docs use the CORRECT special tools!

Re: Going on the Lift Tomorrow for a Rear Drive Failure Repair

Wow! I am overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. Thank you. Surgery got started a little late yesterday. Hit recovery about 4pm, room at 5. Not a great first night but the first steps this morning were very reassuring. I could walk and stand up on my tiptoes. Now comes the hard part, the rebuilding of the cut muscles. I fully intend to do exactly what he said and Jean will see to it I do. I'll keep everyone informed as to how the recovery goes. Yes there is video on the procedure, not mine, but I really wish I had not watched it before I went in.

Outcome is awesome, John - just awesome. Very glad you opted for the surgery and it went smoothly - hope you never have to use any warranty coverage!! Best always.

Here's a get well card for you John and your Misses, who will be playing nurse,
and she will need to tolerate you during your recovery . . .
