EHCS Pump Drive Gear

Well there is always a first time. Out of all the units I have rebuilt I have never run across a broken drive gear. Symptoms were a gawd awful noise when running the unit. Thought it was the motor bearing as I could not remove the armature from the housing. New motor sounded the same. I took the pump off and it sounded the same. Upon a closer inspection of the drive gear/shaft I found a split tooth that had a repair attempt with a crappy glue. It probably worked for awhile but eventually the glue gave up.

Solution was to grind out the old repair then slot the tooth fracture line for proper glue fill. Then added JB Weld to the gear pocket and hold for diameter with a hose clamp. It will be 24 hours before I know if it will work. Stay tuned.

Should have pulled the gear from the spare body before I sent it to Ari a while back, just never thought I would need one.

Re: EHCS Pump Drive Gear

Sometimes JB Weld works wonders as the body of our kitchen disposer can testify, but you may need some reinforcement to resist the tangential tensile forces at the base of the gear teeth on the crack line. I don't recall the amount of clearance on the sides of that gear, but would it be possible to drill a small hole either side of the crack in the meat just below the roots of the teeth and use some steel wire to tie a loop around the crack?

Re: EHCS Pump Drive Gear

Good point but it is already shipped. It was run quite a bit and showed no signs of opening up. I may get it back. I have done repairs on the end cap ears with JB and then I drill and drive in coated pieces of music wire at an angle and have had good success with that. There may be enough room to use fence wire with the twist on the bottom of the gear. I'll remember that for the next one.

Hi John.
Be interesting to see if a plastex kit worked in this application.
You can use the supplied molding piece to make a mold of a good section of teeth, then move it around and build up the missing section using the mold.
It seems to be strong stuff, I repaired my broken hinge lid with it and its been very solid, and really easy to work with.
