Oil for the Gearbox and FD

Probably this is a pretty common question...
But I couldn't find a definitive thread (or didn't look hard enough)

Can I use Fully Synthetic Hypoid 75W-90 oil on my gearbox?

What about the final drive? What oil? same 80/90, or is it 80/140?

Thanks!

Re: Oil for the Gearbox and FD

You can use the same fluid for the transmission and the final drive, either dino or synthetic, and both 75W-90 and 80W-140 will do... Just use quality lubricants and you will be good!

Within that link (long thread on the K1200RS forum), the most important post is the following:
"Ordinary 75W90 or 80W90, GL-5 rated oil is all BMW calls for. Synthetic or mineral oil, makes little difference (the stuff labelled "synthetic" or "full synthetic" usually isn't, anyway)."

Just keep-it-simple - there is no need to pay twice the amount for that oil - neither is there any proof that the Final-Drive will last longer with the most expensive stuff. Ask John Z (jzeiler) here if you want a 2nd or 3rd opinion ;-)

Re: Oil for the Gearbox and FD

I use Walmart full synthetic! On the rear drive I do change it frequently just to keep up with the drives condition. That is more important than what you put in it.

But seriously the transmission on the LT does seem to shift better if you move from Dino to synthetic. Made a believer out of a fellow in Canada who had already bought a spare transmission. Told him to give it a little time and sure enough all his shifting issues vanished.

Amsoil 75w-90 at every oil change. Maybe a little anal, but, a ounce of prevention......

Re: Oil for the Gearbox and FD

In the For What It's Worth department.

I just changed all three oils. For the transmission and FD I once again used Valvoline 80w90 GL5 (NON synthetic) gear oil as I've used for the past few. As both drained I could tell they were still a dark golden brown. Darker than when they went in, but still golden and translucent.

Re: Oil for the Gearbox and FD

I use Redline 75/90 gl5 and noticed softer ,smoother shifting.
Redline will confess its base stocks , no BS double talk. Look up MSDS for different oils , not much BS double talk allowed there.

Re: Oil for the Gearbox and FD

My new to me 02 lt only has 7k mikes on it.. not knowing the maintenance history i changed all the oils last weekend. I wen t all synthetic, mobile one for engine, and lucas 70/90... thinking now maybe I should r&r the coolant , and do a brake flush, I might let the dealer do the brake flush.

I too change the final drive oil with ever engine oil change. ? More so to just monitor the condition
