08 LT Centerstand

Was out in my shop and had to move my LT, went to put bike on centerstand, and the indicator light flashes, but the stand is inoperable. Any ideas? I have emailed my Dealer, but they are closed on Mondays. Any ideas?? Have checked all fuses also. Thanks, Donn

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

When I had this problem it was the brushes in the centerstand motor that were at fault. Pulled the assembly, removed the motor and took it apart. Cleaned up the brushes and all has been well for months now. It is a bit tricky but can be done.

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

I have seen this in several of the later model EHCS motors(post 06). The rubber body seal, doesn't seal. If you live somewhere where road salt is an issue corrosion will form on the screw that grounds one of the brushes. If caught early fairly easy to fix. Just remove the screw and clean it up. Dab a liberal amount of dielectric grease on the cleaned up screw and on the gasket and re-assembly the motor.

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

Probably stupid to remind you...

It's in Neutral?
Reverse lever in Forward?
Side Stand is in Up position?

If all are Yes, then there is a problem. Hope you find it OK.

Will the power center stand work if the brakes are being applied?

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

Corecto on that. Forgot that one and also forgot that you can't have the clutch engaged either.

So, you just have to be sitting there on level ground, holding up the bike with your own two feet, no brakes, no clutch, in neutral... and hope that it goes down.

I use mine most in the shop when I get back from riding.

No it wont. You can't touch the brakes while deploying the stand, if the brake sensors are activated I think you'll get the flashing exclamation mark sign !
Also won't work if you have a faulty brake light.... that's a fun one to work out.

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

don't ask the reasoning's, but occasionally when the bike is running, I'll get the "hell no!" symbol.

If I turn the bike off and on (not started), the center stand works...

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

Thanks, people, getting frustrated with this. Will have to do some more digging. This 08' LT only has 10,000 miles. Only thing I can possibly think of would maybe be a stuck switch on side stand, as I have not used it at all, since bringing it home in November. In neutral, reverse switch in forward, no brakes applied, and clutch lever engaged. ("But I dont WANT to use the sidestand!!)

I trust my Dealer will take care of this if I cant decipher it..Thanks, Donn

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

OK, went for a cruise yesterday, got back, and the centerstand now works. I was messing with rear brake light earlier with some 1157 LEDS, and dont know if this is coincidence or what, but now am a Happy Camper!

Thanks for the Suggestions, Donn

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

A little bit of humor. When I traded my 05 LT for a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic the center stand quit working (never had a problem) guess she was mad at me. I have since gone back to an LT so life is good.

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

Seems like I read a post or maybe in one of the Owners Books that if the tail light is burned out the center stand or something doesn't work as a notice to you or I or something along those lines.

There are several things like that on the LT. And with the almost no load on the LED's the brains of the bike probably thought there was a light out and to keep us from getting hit from behind by a crazed cager it stops something from working.

Either that or you have one of them BMW Genies hiding in your garage just messing with you. I had one of them in mine for a month or so but I finally got him with some rat poison.

Re: 08 LT Centerstand

A faulty brake light (centre one on the LT) will stop your EHCS and/or Cruise from working.
I've had that problem on the LT, and also just ran into similar problem with the GT (1. burned out tail-light on number plate - makes the brake light act as a dim tail-light and fault code stops cruise working, and faulty brake-foot micro-switch not always dis-engaging stops cruise working.)
If you muck around with your brake lights (change a globe, wire additional brake lights etc) and the EHCS starts mucking up.. thats where you should look first!
