Dead Battery then will not start

I have had my K12 in climate controlled storage but forgot to hook up my battery tender. Battery was dead so I put the charger on it for a couple of hours. Alarm went off when I pushed the bike outside. Now the bike will crank over, but will not start. Any ideas?

Re: Dead Battery then will not start

Because it turns over I don't think the alarm is keeping it from starting. The first thing I would listen for is the fuel pump turning on when the key is turned on. Should be a very short burst. Easier to hear with the gas cap removed.

Next pull the clutch in and make sure the gear shift, although it may indicate neutral it may not be there.

Next make sure the reverse lever is sitting securely in the unactivated position.

The "will not start" checklist:

Neutral light on
Forward-reverse switch in forward
Side stand up
Kill switch centered to run position
Alarm properly reset (this may be your issue)

That should be a "will not CRANK" check list vs. will not start.

I would look at fuel as the culprit.

Re: Dead Battery then will not start

I am looking at the OptiMate 4 DUAL PROGRAM BMW CAN-bus edition to maintain my battery its a BMW battery that is just under 2 years old. I have been using a regular battery charger to periodically charge the battery. Rode it for several hours on Monday and fear when I check it later this morning it'll not start.

Anyone have any experience with this item?

TIA Douglas

I have used the Battery Tender Junior on my 1999 K1200 and 2010 HD Ultra for years with great success.

The LT is not CAN-bus.
+1 for Battery Tender and Junior.

Also +1 on Battery Tender. Just leave it connected when not riding and all will be well.

(Unless you have a short somewhere and it can't maintain-then you have a problem of another kind.)

Re: Dead Battery then will not start

Did you check the actual battery voltage using a multi-meter on DC? Mines 2 years old and dead outside now too. One dead cell, 10.something volts. If your voltage is below 11.7 or 11.4V? I believe the bike will not start. 2 years is about all a battery will last, maybe 3 if really properly maintained. Check what the others told you too, especially the reverse switch. I usually turn mine to reverse when winter starts in case somebody wants it more than me. I believe there is something in the alarm system that can turn it off also but I don't think they crank at all then. My alarm system quit once also and I can't remember if it would crank and not start or what, been 2 years for that fiasco. jzeiler above helped me with a fix there to by pass alarm. Yours may have quit too, what year is your LT?

Re: Dead Battery then will not start

My LT is a '09. I Checked yesterday and the bike started, though I could tell that the battery was getting low. I thought the BMW LT was a CAN Bus system. Not sure where I read that.

Re: Dead Battery then will not start

Nope LT is not CAN Bus. There is a circuit in the starter relay that prevents it from engaging below a certain voltage, 12.2 IIRC.
