BAKUP Backrest Question...

Is anybody using this product with a factory standard LT seat?

I just bought one from a fellow member on this board and it's in good shape and all but;

when I installed I realized that little bottom plate used as the platform where the adjustment screw base sits on is digging into the passenger seat badly.

It is so badly digging into it, where I feel like it may damage the front portion of the passenger seat.

Anyone of you had the same problem?
If so, how did you guys prevent it damaging the passenger seat?

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

Jim, mine's the same way. That half radius shaped part leaves an indent on the passenger seat. It goes away after you've had the backup off for awhile. I haven't noticed any wear to the seat cover as of yet. You might be able to place shims between the backrest and where it mounts to the bike to raise it a bit. Not sure how that would affect the seat latching though.

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

Thanks buddy... I talked to Bakup company and they told me that there should be a plastic molding where that base digs into passenger seat. On mine it didn't have that part, Backup sending me one with no charge.
After installing that piece and the sleeve over it I've been told that it won't tear the passenger seat.
I wish they build that adjustment screw portion of the backrest 1,5 inches higher than its current location.

Well, Thanks for the response buddy!

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

My Bakup does the same thing...and I don't have the plastic piece either. Looks like I'll be making a call. Thanks for the heads-up!

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

There should also be 1 inch spacers (came with it when new) that you use under the mounting points that raise it up. Even with that mine does leave an impression on the pillion seat but no damage in 9 years.

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

John I wonder if they designed them different on the newer ones because I do not have the spacer but mine sets on the pillon seat the same way yours does and John it looks like you put something around them plastic mouldings that slide over the top of that sharpe edge to keep them on

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

I don't know why I haven't thought of the spacers on the bottom of the mount. I probably don't need a full 1 inch but mine would feel better a little bit higher. I've never seen the spacers but you can get metal or plastic ones at most any Ace Hardware in the section where they have all the thin drawers with small parts.

A pair of metal ones with a pair of longer Metric Allen heads and a dab or two of JB Weld to hold them and that will fix that up. A good project for this Saturday as it's probably going to rain.

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

I bought a couple of 1/2" thick plastic washers at Ace Hardware and ground about 1/3 of the radius out placed them between rest and frame and installed longer bolts which raised the complete back rest. Never had a problem after that. Fits me better too.

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

I bought a 2nd hand one, and have it set as low as possible, no packing spacers were provided either.
Saw same potential problem, so packed some 6-8mm dense foam cut from an old ground mat (the kind you put under a sleeping bag) around that adjustable support piece before pulling the cover down over it, so it protects both the passenger and the seat from those sharp metal edges, as the vinyl cover doesn't seem to give a lot of protection.
No issues with it cutting seat or passenger.

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

I bought mine new last year and there was no spacers or plastic piece in the box. I tucked the bottom part of the supplied vinyl cover, under the metal part of the backrest that touches the rear seat. So far so good. On my bike both the front and rear seats along with both backrests were redone by Russell. If someone has a picture of this mystical plastic piece, I would like to see it.

I got tired of them coming off and the glue was a sticky mess. I used waxed lacing cord (just because I have a ton of it). It does not come off any more.

Re: BAKUP Backrest Question...

Bought mine new last month and it didn't come with spacers or the plastic piece. I'll be making a trip to the hardware store for some spacers today. Thanks for the tip!
