Intermittent Cruise Control

Some days the cruise control works, some days it doesn't.

The little red light always comes on under the slider but when I flick the set/up/down/resume tongue - sometimes it works. During long days it can work at times and not at others.

When it is working I tickle the clutch or brake lever - looking to see if a sticky or over sensitive switch/sensor is the problem but I have not got any feedback that proves it is one of them.

Any other ideas ?

(The only purpose of the cruise control on the K1200LT is to allow you to adjust the seat heating with your right hand, without suddenly losing speed as you take that hand off the throttle. I can scratch my bollocks with my left hand.)

Re: Intermittent Cruise Control

I had a similar problem with mine a few years ago. Turns out the clutch micro switch was out of adjustment. I search will turn up many posts on this problem.

Have you seen the video tutorial and the PDF document to help you with the cruise-control troubleshooting ?

Re: Intermittent Cruise Control

If your speedometer needle bounces, you may have a break or short in the wiring from the rear wheel sensor. Common issue on the early bikes.

Good suggestion, but I see that in another post he said he had a 2002 model - so no speed sensor on top of rear-drive for this one.

For this 2nd generation K1200LT without the separate speed sensor, by far the most common cause(s) of intermittent cruise-control are:
(1) Clutch switch has become loose and has moved slightly on its pivot screw
(2) Throttle body switch acting up because cable are too tight (friction) or not enough free play adjustement
(3) Rear brake pedal switch dirty or pedal adjustment incorrectly changed behavior of switch

Re: Intermittent Cruise Control

I propose you run the cruise test procedure WHEN you have the failure on. Then you should be able to capture the faulty circuit.

Born to be wild so why not
