ME 880 no more?

I read in the last issue of MCN that Metzeler no longer makes tires for the LT. Sure enough, I was not able to find a fitting for the LT at their web site. Is Bridgestone the last one standing?

Metzler has a replacement, I just bought one. I'm on my way out the door but will get back later.

I just got a Metzler 880 from Dennis Kirk last week. If Metzler is stopping making the 880, better get yours now before existing stock dries up….

Re: ME 880 no more?

Hi,
For what it is worth, I run the bridestones front and rear and have no issues. I am not aware of the cost savings Metz vs Bridg, but enjoy knowing I have fresh shoes on the beast which meet my needs.

When this was reported last year Metzler said they had no plans to stop making the ME880 for the LT.

I get about 32,000 KM on my front ME 880 tires. How many KM's do you get on a front Bridgestone ?.

No sizes for the LT. No 17" rear at all and the lone 17" front is not the right width and aspect ratio.

Being new, they may just not have ramped up those sizes yet, especially if the pipeline is still full of 880s.

Re: ME 880 no more?

I don't want to derail this informative thread into a tire debate but before I buy a Bridgestone rear tire:

Can we confirm that (a) this is the approved Bridgestone tire for the LT (Dennis Kirk web site says "yes", but you never know), and (b) I can run this tire with a Metzeler 880 front tire?

I know there is a favored pairing of Metzeler and Bridgestone tires that many LT owners use; I wanted to ensure I got it right before placing an order.

Thanks.

Re: ME 880 no more?

From the Bridgstone site the Battlax BT-020 rear is a bias 79V rated tire and the front is offered in a bias 58V or a radial 58W. The BT-023 is only radial, front with a 58W and rear 73W.

The BT020 was an original factory installed tire on the LT's. Most tire stores have a section for OEM tires. If you order from that section you will get the right tire.

Re: ME 880 no more?

I just was on the Dennis Kirk website and although it doesn't come up with a fit when you put in your bike. You will get a listing under the tire size for the Metzeler. Try this: https://www.denniskirk.com/metzeler/...prd/540242.sku . They say they have 7 on-hand right now.

I run a front bias ME880 with a rear BT020 and like it. I get much more wear out of the front Metzeler as opposed to a front Bridgestone. I get nearly the same mileage out of a rear Bridgestone that I do on a rear Metzeler along with a significant savings in the process. Both are the correct rating.

On a side note, I've noticed that on the Metzeler website they have not listed tires for the LT for about 2 years now. But the front ME880 I put on this past fall was made in June of 2013. I know of TWO people who put on a rear ME880 that were also made in the spring of 2013.

Wrong - it is a ME880 I was told that I was buying the repacement. It does have some lettering that I don't remember seeing.

My last rear 880 was also made in Brazil and the sidewall split at 4,000 miles at the point where it appeared two pieces of rubber came together.

The 888 appears to be as yet not available in LT sizes. However, I see several sizes listed as REINF so it appears to be targeting the challenging applications so hopefully the LT will be included before too long.

Re: ME 880 no more?

Thanks, guys. I placed an order for a Bridgestone rear tire. I don't need a new rear tire for several thousand miles but when I do this will be my first long-term experience with a Bridgestone. I think it was a Bridgestone that Dan Martin put on my LT for temporary use last summer, while he swapped tires for me. I didn't ride it enough to notice the difference but I'm looking forward to checking it out.

Voyager, thanks for unsetteling my confidence in the 880, but I do appreciate the info. Those Brazillians are top notch when it comes to self defense, maye not when building a tire. I'm leaving tomorrow on a 1200 mi trip. I'll give you a call if'n I need a ride home.

Re: ME 880 no more?

Emailed Metzler NA on the issue with the K1200lt tires and this was their response. My guess is they are letting supplies run out on the ME880.

Hello,

Hello,

*The new ME888 160/70B17 will be brought in later in the year to replace the ME880. The ME880 front will remain for the present time and can be matched with the new ME888 rear. Please see your favorite dealer to purchase.

Thanks for the e-mail.*

That is very good to know. I already bought a Stone rear as I want to try the combination that Saddleman and others favor. However, it is good to know that the Metzeler option will remain. And who knows, maybe the triple 8 will raise the performance bar.

Re: ME 880 no more?

According to their website, the 888 will have similar characteristics to the 880 but with longer life. I'm trying a BT020 this summer so we'll see if I go back to a Metz.

I have about 1500 miles on my first bridgestone. Metz on front. Maybe I ride differently than others, but I cant tell a difference.

Re: ME 880 no more?

Asked through the Metzeler web site response form if the 880s were on the way out and if not why they were not showing on the web site. Response below.

Hello

The website is not been updated and is being revamped. We carry the ME880 tires for this bike like we have for 10 plus years. Please see your favorite dealer to purchase. Thanks for the e-mail.

I don't like making plans for the day....because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around in the courtroom.
