Question High Pitched Whistle

On a recent long trip, my 2001 K1200LT started to emit a high pitched whistling sound (like someone actually blowing on a whistle). It seemed to happen only after a few hours riding and the bike/weather were hot. It eventually stopped but then did it again later in the day and again the next day. I can't tell if the sound is coming from the front or rear of the bike. It's not the brakes, I know that sound and how to stop it. I've checked the rear bearings and there is no wiggling. Any other ideas as to what may cause a sound like this?

Thanks for your thoughts.

My best guess, and the first place I'd look, is the radiator cap. High pressure air blowing out, whistling.
My other guess would be toward the exhaust, but I sort'a doubt it.

Re: High Pitched Whistle

The fuel pump can whistle when the filter is restricted. Open the fuel filler when you hear the whistle. If it is the pump, it should get louder

Check the windshield screw covers, I've had similar things happen when some crosswind occurs.

Re: High Pitched Whistle

I had a similar problem a few years ago. Problem would come and go only when riding and it would go when I pulled over to investigate. Bottom line is that it turned out to be easily diagnosed over time because it got progressively worse. It was the fuel pump. During the repair I found I had silt in my tank, probably pumped in during a gas stop.

I was traveling at the time (1K from home) and I ordered the pump ahead to where I was heading and replaced the pump in a motel parking lot. I also bought a new fuel filter at the time so I didn't have to pull the tank again to replace it on the next maintenance schedule. I am glad I did since I also had to clean the bottom of the tank out. You can rinse out the nylon stick and stone filter very easily.
