Conundrum of a 1200LT type! can I use it or not??

Hi all, have a conundrum here.... what exactly is the difference (or are) between the standard BMW (Showa) rea shock absorber for the 98-04 series 1200LT and the 04-09 series 1200LT-FL??

Have eventually softened the OEM shock on my 1998 LT and the only secondhand one held in stock is a practically new shock from a friends trashed LT-FL (they have different part numbers but have no technical info anywhere!!) LT 33532332891 (pre FL) against FL part 33537670414... someone somewhere MUST have an idea or at least an inkling why??

I know FLs handle better, and seem to have a modified front set up (reduced trail??)

Note: just if anyone was in doubt anywhere.... MY bike is a 1200LT, registered in January 99, but having the details from Berlin, I know that the bike was made there in 11/98... the frame number being one of the first batch with some strange electrical mods that were applicable ONLY up to frame ZD 40876 ie all machines made from June 1997 up to Xmas 1998(yes they started building 12LTs from June 1997!!!)

Welcome to the BMWLT forum. I seriously doubt you will notice much difference between the two shocks. The geometry on the paralever was not changed between the 99-04.5 and the 04.5 through '09 model years. The shock spring might be different (stiffer) and that is not a bad thing. Take your shock off and measure the units (side-by-side) and see if it will fit without any problem and go riding.

Enjoy!

The PN is different but the only real difference is that the damping was much better on the later shock. They are completely interchangeable.

I have a an early 2000 LT running shocks off a 2005 model with 10k on them when I bought them and added HyperPro Springs. The shock (strut) fit front and rear were identical.
