are Moto lights killing battery?

I just checked voltage on battery on idle 13.80v. Turned on motos and it dropped down to 13.18. The motos were installed by a PROFESSIONAL ?? by P.O. I am not sure what caused my pc680 Odyssey to die after 5 months I used a tender except one week when I was away without bike.Just wondering if any one with motos have had a problem... Thanks

Re: are Moto lights killing battery?

I seriously doubt it. There's a lot of things that come on when that key is turned on, and you are still well above 13 volts.

Re: are Moto lights killing battery?

I had Moto Lights on my LT & never had a problem. It could just be a bad Battery. I'll seen bad ones from time to time. A few years ago the local dealer got in a bad batch of batteries. They had 7 or 8 dead bikes before they found the problem was the 20 or so batteries they just got in from BMW.

Re: are Moto lights killing battery?

Only if they are on when you have the bike parked.

Seriously anything above 12.7 will be charging the battery anyway. A functioning alternator supplies all the electrical loads on the bike and what ever is left over charges the battery.

If you are concerned about current draw, try these
http://dx.com/p/mr16-4w-4-led-6500k-...hite-12v-30208

They match the "color" of my HID as well.

Some where on this site there is a thread with photos that I took showing an "A"-"B" comparison.

Re: are Moto lights killing battery?

All of that and 13.2 is the "float" value for a fully charged battery. So no, it's not the auxiliary lamps.

Re: are Moto lights killing battery?

Motorcycles dont really charge the battery at idle. What is the voltage at 2000 rpm with them on and off?

And you want to see a power draw? measure the voltage at idle when the fans kick on.

Currently riding a 2003 K1200LTC

Re: are Moto lights killing battery?

Only problem I had with mine was. The right one was flickering on & off. Then didn't work at all. Figured out it was a broken wire in the jacket Pulled the light off the fork mount, cut the jacket back.Turned out who ever ran the wires pulled the wire ties to tight. It cut thru the ground wire. That's the only problem I've had.

Re: are Moto lights killing battery?

I run with Motolights and bought the 4W single bulb MR16s from them here in CIncinnati.
I can tell you the 4W LEDs put out less light that the 35W halogen - but mine are there for
the triangle of light not necessarily more light to see by!! I also took out the switch and run
my all the time and with on 8W load in the battery I am fairly happy that any current draw is
very small.

Since you have been posting a lot about the Odyssey battery I would would get a top
quality charger and the Battery Tender brand in my opinion if ok but certainly not the top of
line charger. In fact I have had two battery tenders go bad and they replaced them except
for the shipping both ways on my part - more expensive than the tender. I now run an
Optimate and that unit is quality, quality, quality!! Check them out:
