Curious about computer memory

Just changed out my 4 1/2 year old BMW battery for an Odyssey PC680. All leads were disconnected for at least half an hour while I cleaned up road dust etc under the seat.

So.... turned on ignition, twisted throttle a couple of times, key fob works, bike starts - I'm a happy camper!

Then I noticed that the radio remembered all of my preset stations, which I thought I would have to enter again. The computer also remembered my odometer mileage (thanks), miles to empty, and average miles per gallon. However, trip meter 1 and 2 were reset to zero.

Now I'm curious whether there are really good capacitors in the computer or another battery somewhere? How long would you have to leave the battery out to lose the display settings? I'm guessing that the computer remembers the odometer mileage no matter what.

I'm don't know a lot about BMW electronics, so this is a real head scratcher for me.

Or those are stored in flash memory that does not need power, like your cellphone.

Re: Curious about computer memory

OK. That sounds like a good explanation. Thanks!
