K1200LT won't turn over

I have a 2002 LT with 26,000 miles which I have owned for several months. Two days ago, I got on it to ride to work but it wouldn't start. The engine woould not turn over at all. When I hit the start button, the lights will dim but nothing from the starter. The battery charge seems to be fine. It was cranking OK over the weekend.
I've tried all the obvious. Any ideas where the best place would be to start eliminating possible causes? Help, I'm losing my zen.

Re: K1200LT won't turn over

high odds it's the battery. LT's are funny (no pun intended) that way. put a FULL charge on it-not a trickle-and watch her percolate again!

Re: K1200LT won't turn over

Put a meter on the battery and see what it reads when the key is on. Anything below about 12.2 the starter relay will not engage.

I'm old and forgetfull so I check these first.

Kick stand up if in gear?
Kick stand down, is it in neutral?
Is the reverse knob in the forward position?
Kill switch in the center position?
Battery connections clean and tight?
If you had the battery out, did you get ALL the wires back on?

Hope you solve your problem soon!
Vern

Bought used K1200LT number 3. This one is green/teal with 31,369(now 7/29/2018 54,143) miles and is an '02. The first 2 bikes made it to near 150,000 miles.

Due to heart health, the Dr says not to ride under 40 degree air temp. Ugh! Now it is harder to get my 18000 miles a year in just in the summer. Guess that stopped my 20 degree rides now.

Re: K1200LT won't turn over

Well, it was indeed the battery. I put the charger on and it started right up. It was strange that it cranked over fine the previous day. Time for a replacement.
Thanks for all the advice. I was sweating this one, all for naught. Now, maybe I can for a ride, if it ever gets below 100 here in Texas.

Glad you got the problem figured out.

Even here in NW MO it's been in the upper 90's so I get my ride in between 6 and 10 AM. Works for me anyway.

Happy riding!!

Re: K1200LT won't turn over

before you go out and spend the $'s on a new battery, try:

fully charge the current battery
put a trickle charger on it for a day or two-recommend the battery tender or equiv-not the Junior-but make it a present design-not an old one from our ancient years.

if it continues to hold a charge-which i suspect it will do-just be sure to put it on the battery daily and leave it on until you're ready to ride. when you return from the ride-put it back on. THEN if you continue to have a problem, replace the battery.

the key i have found, is leaving the trickle charger on it when not riding. since doing this i've had ZERO issues battery wise.

Just my 10 cents worth (and it has a value of 1 cent)

Re: K1200LT won't turn over

+1 on the battery tender. When the bike is not rode often enough the battery will drain to the point you have experienced. The battery tender maintains a proper charge and will circumvent this. It also will extend the battery's useful life.

Re: K1200LT won't turn over

I have a 2002 Lt Elite with 20000 miles. All was well and had great 250 mile trips each week. Now bike will not turn over. It can push start it, reverse works, kick stand down while in gear turns off motor, battery fully charged, lights and horn work with no dimming when I push start button. Any ideas for a shade tree repair is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: K1200LT won't turn over

Sounds like your starter relay bit the dust. It is only used for starting and reverse is controlled by the reverser controller. That tells me the starter motor is ok. Only other thing is the two switches on the shaft of the F-R knob, as they route the signal from the starter button from the relay to the controller when you go from reverse to forward and back.
