So just what IS the AUX port good for?

About 6 months ago, I obtained the Aux In jack from the Bimmer dealership, and installed it in my Beemer, then went on an extended trip.

Found it wasn't near loud enough and figured I'd just get an amp when I got back...then found a couple of posts here that said an amp really didn't help.

So why is it even available? (Or is it used in some factory situation where they managed to pump a strong enough signal through it?)

Has anyone managed to drive a good signal through it? my iPhone and iPod sure couldn't.

I use the stock aux jack for xm radio. Sound quality is not the best. Can't help with the smart phone..... I use a dumb phone and and it's still smarter than I am.

If you're talking about the Aux port on the Voice II system

Then the primary advantage is that it is a stereo input. Previous BMW comm system had a mono aux input. I use a Sansa Fuse MP3 player to feed mine. Good for all day riding and then some.

Re: So just what IS the AUX port good for?

I use a garmin Nuvi300 as my bike wasn't specced with the BMW navigator. The Nuvi300 was the model with built in MP3 player, so I run a male-male cable into the AUX port. Music sound quality is excellent, no amp required, and the navigation directions come in over the top of the music automatically. Guess I'm just lucky to have bought the Nuvi300 6 years ago, updated the maps and still have the luxury of an mp3, which is not common on models now.

I run my garmin 550 and my I-pod music player thru it and it works great. I think I even plug my ipod into the aux and my garmin into the phone jack and both work great.

Naw, I suspect there's something active there. I'm talking about the Aux jack kit you can buy that looks like this: http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=340

I installed it a few years back... its good-for-nothing. Eventually went the Ipod/DICE route replacing the CD stacker for when out of radio station range. At least it gives volume, if little control once you disable its ability to flatten your battery.
