Looking for reputable shop to replace my shock springs

Hi folks. Picking up my Hyperpro front and rear springs on Friday in Niagara Falls New York. Somewhere along the way to the BlueRidge Parkway I'd like to find a shop to switch out the springs on my 2007 K 1200 LT. I'm willing to travel off route as I have time to kill. I called a BMW dealer in New York State and he said that he didn't have the spring compression tool needed to remove the rear spring. Also any idea how much labour is involved in this ? Thanks in advance !

Re: Looking for reputable shop to replace my springs

it's a fairly time consuming job to get the struts off before you can change the springs, best to take apart yourself during the winter when not riding, I was able to use a regular spring compressor to take the front apart, there is bracket needed to compress the rear, fits over top end, 1/2 inch steel plate with a specific shape cut into it and threaded rod through a bar at the bottom to compress spring - there are drawings and pictures in different threads on this site
once they are off the bike you may be able to find a shop locally that can do them for you, I think most have done their own

I have a real life size paper image of the plate needed for the rear - you could get a local welding shop to cut it out of a piece of steel

sorry probably not what you want to hear, others may have a different opinion

Re: Looking for reputable shop to replace my springs

That's the same answer I got from two local BMW dealers. Apparently, BMW does not sell springs by themselves, only the spring/strut combo so the dealers do not have a spring compressor (because they will not separate the spring from the strut - only replace as a unit). I had to rely on the good ppl on this board (esp Robert aka Scouter) to help me out. Some others have found car service shops that compressed the springs, but I tried a Goodrich shop and they didn't have a small enough compressor.

Long way of saying, plan ahead on this project.

If you are on the Blue Ridge Parkway you will be reasonably close to Saddleman. He has one of my spring compressors and may be able to help.

The guy at the NC entrance to the Tail is awesome and will do it while you wait...if that helps.

Sorry I forget his name. Side benefit? Ride the Tail while there?
