wierd electrical issue

while at ccr bike began to show a wierd no crank over fault.but by cycling the handel bar kill switch back and forth (on/off) it would crank & start.
talked to john Z while there about it he thought a safety relay may sticking and by cycling it was reset. he had herd of it one time before he is still on the road home(from ccr) and said he will take a look at wireing diagram when he gets home.
has anyone else had this issue & what caused the condition.
(bike has no alarm system)

Re: wierd electrical issue

A first glance shows this to be some what complicated as the EME relay feeds switched power to drive the coil of the engine electronics relay and also switched power to the starter button. The same relay coil gets its ground from the reverser controller. My initial cut was poor contacts on the EME relay that are "wiped" by cycling the kill switch. Would really like to have the faulty bike for a few days to do a proper analysis.

Re: wierd electrical issue

My initial guess would be water intrusion/corrosion on the start button. Try some compressed air around the kill switch and start button while cycling it and see if that helps. Try keeping the start button pressed when it fails to crank and then cycle the kill switch. But before all that, check your battery connections for voltage and tightness. Compare the voltage on the cable ends to the voltage on the battery posts. If there's a difference, it indicates looseness or corrosion.

Re: wierd electrical issue

hi john i wish i could get you the bike too. but we are on different sides of the country

on the way home on the highway at speed the bike did it (made a momentary hick up)
like a split second stall(in heavy portland traffic of course)but stayed running but not that well
but ok.
i noticed i had no power to the cruse control, stereo.i had to slow right down because of traffic and the bike went dead.i think it was only running on the alternator, before the bike came to a complete stop i poped the clutch and it restarted.i held revs around 2000 when stopped bike continued to run. when the traffic calmed down at speed i cycled the switch and the bike went back to normal.
at least the big girl got us home
. now she needs/wants a little tlc lol
