Shocks & Springs or Springs Only?

I have recently seen a number of LT riders talk about how much better their bikes ride after replacing their shocks or springs with HyperPro, Wilber, or Ohlins. My '07 bike has almost 28,000 miles on it and the shocks don't leak, but it tends to bottom more easily than I think it should. I have not yet played around with the preload adjuster on the rear, but will do so in the next few weeks (after I get my new seat back from Russell).

It looks like front & rear shocks run up to $2,000 ( ) for the set, while a set of springs are about $300. For those of you that changed your shocks and/or springs, what was your mileage when you changed; did you do front, rear, or both; which brand did you go with; and are you satisfied with the results? Thanks!

I put Hyperpros on front and back and LOVE them.

Ron - I think "like Butt-ahh" has a new meaning to Jerry Sandusky..

Getting back to my thread, HyperPro-spectively thinking, it's beginning to look like spring time.

Re: Shocks & Springs or Springs Only?

Hyperpro springs front and rear @ 14,000 miles. Stopped all the bottoming but rides just a bit stiffer. Very happy.

Re: Shocks & Springs or Springs Only?

Hyper-pro front and rear @ 60K+. Happy. Tweeking the preload should be all you need at your low milage. I added fluid to the preload at ~45k.

Re: Shocks & Springs or Springs Only?

Hyper-pro front and rear at 12k miles. Did not completely resolve bottoming out, and as Robert said - rides a bit stiffer. I think the ride is improved, but I also think my expectations were too high to begin with. The difference is definitely noticeable. Was worth the $300 (plus my and Robert's labor - thanks again!).

Re: Shocks & Springs or Springs Only?

Well, I decided to go the shocks and springs route… I ordered a set of Yacugars in April, they finally arrived, and will be going in next week. Hopefully, they'll be even smoother than butt-ah!

Re: Shocks & Springs or Springs Only?

I just finally put my Yacugar rear shock on that I just got and also ordered in April it was real easy to put on but that darn top bolt on the shock was a pain but with my wife and I both on the bike today on a 350 mile ride their was a big improvement

Re: Shocks & Springs or Springs Only?

Is the passenger happy in each case? I know my wife loves how the bike rides with stock setup - very smooth and only bottoms on big bumps that I didn't see coming. I've only got 21k miles on the bike so I'm not thinking an upgrade is worth it but not sure.
