Sight Glass Change

At my last oil change (my first on this bike) I had a difficult time ascertaining the oil level since my sight glass was stained to almost black. I bought the bike with less than 7K miles and the PO had the oil changed (BMW oil) for me before I picked it up. I put on the recommended 6K miles before changing. I have two questions, 1: why did the sight glass turn so dark and 2: is it possible to change the glass on the sidestand without losing any oil? I have changed the sight glass on my wife's R1100RSL without too much difficulty. It was still clear at 50K+ miles. It just started weeping oil.

Thanks, Robert.

Re: Sight Glass Change

as long as there is no oil showing, it should not be an issue, I used a soldering iron to burn a hole into the sight glass, and pulled it out.

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying " I'll try again tomorrow".

That is a good idea as drilling would introduce crap you would not want in there.

Re: Sight Glass Change

I have the same problem. My sight glass is so dark that I have not been able to see through it for some time.

+1 I agree John. Excellent tip Sheldon....
I'm still debating with myself on changing mine, as it usually takes a small flashlight for me to see mine anyway. Maybe it wouldn't with a new one, dunno.

It seems that when you change the oil you can easily knock it out from the filter opening with a long screwdriver.

Not trying to start an oil thread, but brand of oil do you use? I use Castrol 4T Dino oil and change once a year or 6k miles and my sight glass is very clean after 38K miles.

This bike has had only BMW oil. With only 14K miles I have to assume that it had an oil change at 600 miles then either one or two before It was sold to me. I changed it at about 13K.

Re: Sight Glass Change

Robert, perhaps you have sludge buildup on the inside. Try reaching inside with some cotton cloth attached to a screwdriver (zip strip) and see if you can just wipe the inside of the window clean. That, or maybe hire some miniature mechanics............. ok, try wiping it off and see what happens.

Dean, you made me chuckle. The window has a metal disc backing with perforations to allow the oil through. Wiping is not an option. I still wonder why this glass got dirty and my wife's was clear at 50+K.

Well, would a carb cleaner nozzle or Q-tip fit through the mesh? I'm just trying to save your beer money, my friend.

That sure seems odd it got dirty so quickly? Maybe a bad batch of plastic or something.
