K1200LT Newbie!!

I recently totaled my K1600GTL by hitting a deer on a cross country trip. After putting 8K miles on it, I decided it wasn't worth spending $25K to replace it, so I found an '05 LT with only 9K miles on it for less than half the price. So far I love it more than the GTL. It's not as fast, but much better suited for the style of endurance riding I do.

So far the only things I've been stumped on, since I don't have an owners manual, are how to reset the BC. When I hold in the BC button it shows 16mpg and then shows 200mpg. The miles to empty aren't nearly accurate and I'm assuming it's due to the mileage not being accurate. Other than that I think I've pretty much got everything figured out.

Oh yeah....I almost forgot...there are fog lights on the bike that I'm guessing were added aftermarket and for the life of me I cannot find the switch to turn them on. I followed the wires as far as I could with the tupperware on and they're headed to the right side of the bike, but NO SWITCH anywhere. I'm stumped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway, I look forward to reading and hopefully adding the the forum.

Re: K1200LT Newbie!!

Your lights are probably attached to the turn signal cancel button. Push and hold to activate. Can't recall the brand name. Isn't there a reset button on the BC display? I think there is on mine. There is a way to recalibrate the computer (I think). Hopefully someone will chime in shortly.

Re: K1200LT Newbie!!

I hit a deer with my LT on a cross country ride in 2006. Result: LT: broken turn signal lens, paint crack where the tupperware bent, and some light bulbs. Deer: roadside compost. Score one more for the LT.

The lights maybe controlled with an Autoswitch as Opee suggests.

Check the Hall of Wisdom, or just search around the site for info on resetting or recalibrating the BC. Or for just about anything else you want to know about the LT.

Re: K1200LT Newbie!!

Sounds like it is working correctly.

When you reset the BC, the ave. mpg should go up to 200 mpg and then down to the current mpg. Once you set the mpg, it should reset the calculation for the distance to empty - does it slowly over time.

It the fuel gauge stopping or does it go down to empty? If it doesn't go down past 1/3, you most likely have a bent fuel sending tube which could be the problem - an easy search here will tell you how to fix it.

Re: K1200LT Newbie!!

I'll check the turn signal reset button to see if it has any affect on the fog lights. As for the BC, I can't find any kind of reset button. I've tried holding the BC button, but it doesn't seem to work. The BC constantly shows 16mpg and always less than 50 miles to empty. Hmmmmmm.......

Re: K1200LT Newbie!!

Here's a quote from my Rider's Manual regarding resetting the BC:

"Each time you push rocker switch... on the left handlebar fitting in the BC direction, you step from one function to the next in the following sequence:

- Average road speed
-Press button 1 in the BC direction for more than 2 seconds to reset
- Residual range
- Average consumption 1
- Average consumption 2
- Resetting of average consumption 1/2 by pressing button 1 longer than 2 sec. in direction BC
- Ambient temperature"

In relation to the PIAA lights, I hooked up my Autoswitch to the high beam switch instead of the turn signal cancel switch, as I found this easier to do in the limited time I had available to get them working before a trip. You might try holding down either of those two switches for a couple of seconds and look to see if the LED light starts flashing from red (off) to green (on).

Hope this helps!
