Smile Removed top box, new bike now. Question?

No longer interested in getting a lighter bike. With the topbox removed, my '03 LT has undergone a nice transformation! Lighter, faster and much more manueverable for day to day use.

The stock flat black plastic tray looks ok, but I am interested in purchasing a nice rack to bolt on back aft.

Contacted A & S just now, three hundred bucks for their nice aluminium rack is ok, but an additional seventy seven for the little hoopty that would provide some support for the passenger backrest?? Huh??

Did an exhaustive search on the old board re: the Fort Worth Rack and such. Cannot find the "Fort Worth Rack" anywhere. What are my options? I'd be eternally grateful for a linky or three!

IMO, your best bet is to be patient and buy one from the Classifieds in here, or search eBay every week. Either will save you mucho dinero.

I believe the A & S rack and the Fort Worth rack are the same rack. I think the rack was sold by Fort Worth BMW hence the name. I have to agree with Joe that you can find them in our classified's or on Ebay in the $175-250 range. Taking the top box off makes a huge difference in handling.

Red face Thanks!

I was on the phone for well nigh on thirty minutes with the gal from A&S, trying to determine what Ed Zachary the "grab rail" for seventy seven dollars consisted of.....as their web photo of "the rack" showed it already installed.

Please forgive me, but almost eighty dollars for that leetle bit of aluminium ISN'T excessive?? I knew the farkles weren't going cheap, but c'mon. I'm just ranting now.

Bike looks just fine with the box removed....and AGREE wholeheartedly on the handling and such! New bike!

Two weeks ownership, and back in love.

I'd sure like to see a pic with it removed when you get a chance.

Talking

The transformation from a "touring bike" to a "sport tourer" is eleven minutes back and forth.

I am simply amazed with my "new" motorcycle! She romps now. Screw 'em and their rack.

Ft Rack

Looks like there is a bid of $150 on the rack currently. You might be able to get it for less than the $175 buy it now price.

Must be for the BMW logo on the grab rail. Checked your profile but can't tell where you are located.

No more Trunk

I removed my trunk box as well and the bike handles totally different. I use my bike for funeral escorts and used the flat area to mount some emergency lights. When turning the bike does not have that pendulum swing feel to it anymore. The time is worth the performance to remove the trunk if you want a different feel and look

Removed Top Box

Looking at the pics of the topbox off, I noticed some bikes still have the antennae and others don't. Is it an option to go either way and what does it require?

The topbox can be removed without touching the antennas. (4 bolts in the floor of the box and unplug a couple of plugs under the rear seat) If you want the antenna's off you can do so.

Topless for me.

You won't believe what a difference it makes in the way the bike handles. I'll never go back unless I need the storage. It's topless for me!

Topless

It's not just the LT that feels different with the top box off.

After Les removed his top box and commented on the difference, we took mine off the CLC. Makes a BIG difference, although my trunk doesn't weigh quite 30 pounds. Also, when my top box came off, there's already a built rack of sorts with the BMW logo on the back of the passenger back rest.

I bought my "Ft. Worth" rack from A&S. When I got mine it was not drilled for the grab handle so they sent me one that was so when you order it and do not get the handle make sure they don't send you the drilled rack. I like the grab handle because I mounted the rack in the rear mounting position so the rear of the rack follows the lines of the rear of the body and it also gives me a perfect place to pack my tent poles between the rear seat and the grab handle. Unles my wife wants to go with me the rear trunk stays off.
