Black smoke

My riding buddies (you know those specks in the mirror) tell me that when I hit the throttle hard they see a plume of black smoke (thru their binoculars is my guess). I notice black soot on the chrome where the exhaust exits. I'm guessing that it's running rich. Is there an adjustment for the fuel mixture? I plan on changing the plugs and other stuff when I take off Tupperware. How hard is it to get to the engine? Is it quick and easy? Thanks

Re: Black smoke

How far back is the last air filter change Ted?..........could just need replaced........The EFI should adjust for the rest...........just saying, it could be not too hard.........You do have to take the tank off to get to it..........

Re: Black smoke

I had the 12k and yearly done at purchase by the P.O. he brought it to Mortens sp? in the DC area. I know they pushed the valve check and air filter to the 18k not sure on plugs . I have put almost 7k on it since purchase (4/2013). I have only changed the oil.

This is all over this site from my first years here and all proceeding years, the explanation is that the bike goes to full rich at full throttle to protect the engine from a lean condition. The only worry you might have is if this embarrasses you, if so, stay off of absolute full throttle when your buddies are behind you or just laugh it off and leave em in your cloud.

Really, it's normal for the bike and nothing to worry about.

Re: Black smoke

Thanks STEBS. That's what I wanted to hear. I did some searching but came up blank. I just tell them I have no idea what their exhaust looks like as that would mean I was behind them

That is correct , they smoke during WOT but smoke much more wit a bad O2 sensor .
How is fuel milage ? Dead O2 sensor = mid thirties MPG .

Re: Black smoke

It sounds like a bad O2 sensor.. I think it has a 10 year warranty on it. Its part of emissions system, if my memory serves me.

From what I've seen, all LT's have soot on the lower part of the chrome exhaust.

Re: Black smoke

Yea. It happened last weekend to me. when we (me and an 1800 wing)left the rest of the group in the dust or puff of smoke. John Zeller said its when the throttle goes full open. The ECU goes full rich for a second. Nothing to worry about. She ran like perfect that day..
