Battery change suprize

Pardon what might seem utter mechanical incompetance, but...
My older battery died sometime while I was away this summer. Replaced it today.
Upon connecting the battery, the starter immediately engaged. Disconnected battery. Turned key to off/lock, removed key and set kill switch to 'kill'. Reconnected battery - starter trying to kick over (this time no ignition and I didn't jump quite as high).
What am I missing?

The relay for the starter has welded its contacts together.

There is a backyard mechanics way of getting it to release, but I cannot remember it . Something like holding the starter button down and then connecting the battery? One of the oldtimers will surely chime in soon.
EDIT
OK...found this by doing a search http://www.bmwlt.com/ubbthreads/show...&sb=5&o=0&vc=1

Re: Battery change suprize

I'm not exactly an old-timer, but I've had the problem. Make sure the battery has full juice, and when you connect the battery, hit your starter button a bunch of times quickly; it will disengage; and you'll be riding.

The consensus is that you should replace the starter relay, its a good idea even though it still functions. (I'm guilty of 'forgetting' to replace the starter relay, and its been functioning fine for the last 15k miles or so.)

Right side of the bike, underneath most things and just about in the middle of everything else. If you look just in front of the battery you'll see the end of the alternator. I believe the relay is just in front of and close to the top of the alternator, but enclosed in a plastic box.
