Throttle Cable Question

After much back and forth on the question with members on this forum, I replaced the throttle cable on my 02 LT successfully. However, I traded in that bike and now have an 05 model. From reading some of the old posts, I see that the throttle cable was redesigned for that year, but it still has the cable that is bent at 90 degrees to the grip. The one I installed on my 02 was a later version that was not at such a steep angle as the previous version. My question is whether I need to replace the one on my 05 to the newer version. I haven't noticed any unusual problems. The throttle on this bike is always going to be hard to move even with the latest cable. (I guess they don't have this problem anymore with the throttle by wire they have on many newer bikes.) Has anybody had problems with the cable on 05 models and gotten better results with the newer cable? I have the bike apart for service, and it would be a good time to do it if it needs replacement.

Re: Throttle Cable Question

I am sure that others will chime in. You have the re-designed throttle cables, but I would still change them out at approximately 60k just to be on the safe side. Just part of preventative maintenance. You do not want to be stuck on the side of the road!

Re: Throttle Cable Question

When my dealer upgraded the throttle cables on my 99 LT BMW told them to upgrade with 06 cables. I don't know what the difference is but I guess BMW thought the 06 cables are better than the 05.

Re: Throttle Cable Question

Most if not all 05s were built in 04. Mine had the old style cables and was built 04/04. I did replace them when I damaged one during my clutch job with the new style (which is all they carry now anyway).

Re: Throttle Cable Question

Old style cables were on US bikes from 99-05. 2006 is the year the cables changed. (2005 on European models.) Part numbers are available on the forum. I'm too lazy to search 'em up. You'll need 2 cables PLUS the plate that covers the grip housing.

Re: Throttle Cable Question

Some times I ride long distances, much of the time I can't use the cruise control. So, for me, if there is a chance that a newer set of cables will reduce the pressure I have to use for the throttle is worth the risk I won't benefit from the newer cables.

Re: Throttle Cable Question

I know that I should not have done it but I unhooked one of the three throttle return springs and I am very happy with the result

I might look into that.
