I agree, I'd really like a lower first gear, but it requires a physically larger diameter driven gear and as John Z states, there isn't sufficient space within the standard casing to allow it. However, it may be possible to weld and machine the gearbox casing to provide the required clearance, but someone would need to be real keen to take on such a project. Plenty of engineering shops specialise in gear manufacture, so that wouldn't be a show stopper. For the Aussies, google Carr Gears as an example. A sacraficial gearbox is what is required.
