How many riders own more than one bike?

I was reading the post about switching from the LT to a Harley Ultra and was curious as to how many of the K1200LT owners actually have other bikes in the garage too.
To me a motorcycle is like a tool... there's not one tool that can do every job you want. So why settle for just one! I've been adding to my toolbox for years.

If I wanted to ride the same thing all the time I'd still be married!

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

Maybe in the Carolinas, where the 'fun season' lasts a little longer that it does up in the North, it makes some sense. I, too, had multiple bikes, an MGB roadster, and an old VW Rabbit Convertible in the garage. However.....looking at the cost to insure and operate this fleet, and the fact that we really have only about a 5-month window to use this stuff here in NEOhio....made me realize just how foolish it is to be spending money without being a little more selective in my choice of toys.

Got rid of a lot of stuff. In a hurry. Bank balance shows it.

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

Good point DW, I grew up in Vermont.

My solution to the short riding season was to move South as soon as I could. I've been in South Carolina for 25 years now and I've never has to shovel any snow since moving!

I've got my insurance with Progressive, $480 a year for 3 motorcycles and 2 scooters with 2 of the bikes having full coverage, it's one of the only perks of getting older! On the negative side South Carolina has a personal property tax... so each year they tax you on the value of your vehicles.. the older they get the less they rape you!

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

My wife wanted the LT for XCountry. She hated the seat on the RT, and I bought the R90/6 new in 1975. So, there's a bike for each mission:

1975 R90/6 w no bling
2000 R1100RT
2005 K1200LT

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

Robert,
I really like the old Cushman's - Dennis Carpenter is right up the road from us in Charlotte NC. They have shows in Charlotte that are a must see.

I've attached a PIC of my 1942 Roadmaster Cycle Truck with a 300 series 1950 Whizzer motor attached. Roadmaster only made them for a couple years, until all their resources went into the war effort. After the war Roadmaster never made the Cycle Truck again so 99% of them out there are made by Schwinn.

I'd really like to add an Eagle to the stable...

* I added another picture of a 1948 Whizzer with an H motor... that one came from Schwinn already motorized... BIG FUN !!!!

Nice fleet if I can call them that.
In answer to your question I have one other bike in the garage . . .1985GW limited edition. Since I purchased the LT my attention has been devoted to it. Or should I say the LT has forced herself on me. And I am impressed and fully engaged. Also +1 for the affordability factor and real estate I reside in. My insurance and registration would not be worth it to be half way across country on the LT while the GW sits in the garage at home being jealous Right now she is in a more understandable position on her CS with leaky front fork seals. My intentions to make her a trike for my later years sits well with me. I'm still in charge of both of them.

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

I have had a 1966 R-50 since I was 18 years old. I am now 65 and I still have the same
R-50. I have always loved riding the R-50, smooth, quiet, and sturdy. As time went by I silently wished for a little more power to get up those Vermont hills when I visited my parents from my home in New York. As I got even a little bit older I began to think.. if I could wave a magic wand what would I like from my R-50 besides a little more power? - I thought something to keep the wind and cold from going through me as I ride along those cold streams by the roadside that seem to be everywhere in Vermont. I kept an eye on BMW's progress in motorcycles over the years - nothing seemed to grab my attention --- sure they were more powerful and had better wind protection, but they were not made as well as the R-50, and the price to buy a new one!, and not to mention how BMW had increased the price for parts - and how could I part with my old gal R-50?

To make a long story short, my brother and I recently came into an inheritance that was larger than we expected. My brother, who lives in Florida, had been riding his 2000 BMW 1200 lt since it was new. He decided to buy a BMW 1600 GT with his money. He gave me his well cared for 1200 lt. Guess what - perfect! - my little R-50 wish list fulfilled!.

Yes I now have 2 bikes, R-50 in NY to keep me humble, and the 1200 lt in Florida to remind me that a magic wand just might exist. Best of all the worlds!

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

2 bikes for me. Both make me smile for different reasons. The 2005 LT is smooth, fast and a great tourer and handler. My Honda VTX1800R is a v-twin torque monster that is raw, breezy and a bit of a show-boat with all that metallic orange and chrome. I luv 'em both. My wife would like one gone. Not gonna happen.....

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

I feel no one bike can do it all, but there are some that come close. I have the following:

1. R1200RT: Touring, grocery shopping, taking the Misses out 2 up.
2. S1000RR: back roads, starbucks, bike night, sport class bike hyper bike
3. Dorsoduro 750: Hooligannisum de jour, upright comfort, city errands, v twin rumble, jump trails.

I feel these bikes give me a wide range of coverage.

I had 6 bikes about 2 years ago (Daytona 675, 955i and RVF 400). The S1000RR covered what the 2 Daytona's could do, the RVF400 was to small ride. I like having 3, seems perfect, wouldn't mind adding a Harley XR1200 to the mix because I think they're neat bikes, but I have a feeling I wouldn't really like it because of the poor handling and weight.

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

I'm one of the fortunate ones to have two. I bought the LT new in early 2001. I was going to sell it after I got my GTL but my wife said if I had it converted to a trike she would like to ride it. We got it converted back in September but to this day she has only spent about 30 minutes as a passenger, not learning to ride it.
In the past I have also had a R100GS, an 08 GSA, KTM 950 and Honda XR650R as second bikes.
Two at a time is enough for me.

Friend of mine has a Whizzer made during the war. Has no chrome at all. I had a Highlander as a kid. Paid $60.00 for it. Wish I had it back. The unusual part about that one was it had a rear swingarm with two coil springs (no shocks) and a leading link/springer front end and a sprung saddle. Actually rode pretty well.

Right now 1 & 3/4 both LT's. I knocked the front end off my 2000 a few weeks ago & it should be back to 100% this weekend.

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

When I bought my LT back in '02, I had three bikes at that time. The '02 LT, an '83 Honda V65 Magna, and a '98 Kaw ZX-11. LOVED all three bikes. But I found I was always working on at least one of them ... if not two of them.

Until I'm old enough to semi-retire ... or rich enough to have someone else do the work, I'll stick to just having one bike.

And yes, I am STILL married ... after 27 years.

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

1. 2001 K1200LTC - heavily farkled and my second of the breed. 140K on the first.

2. 1979 R-80/7 with 22K miles, still my favorite all time bike. It's a Sunday driver only.

3. 2001 KLR 650 salvage title bought for $500.00. Dependable as a rock with 9K. I've now got $1K into it total. When I crash I just pick it up, shrug my shoulders and keep riding.

4. My home built 2008 R11 "Vergasser" street legal mini bike which puts a smile on my face even when I'm having a rotten day. It only goes 55mph. I want to be buried with it. Really.

5. About 50 others along the way...

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

I get it. I completely understand the original post.

I sold my 01 LT this past fall and I am currently looking for a 05 or newer Lt. I keep looking at the space in the garage where it was parked. All my bike handle differently and I like them for different reasons. (what mood suits).

09 Road King just motor and steeel (cruise) have taken it for weekend trips.
09 Ultra Has been to New England to Florida (wife is most comfortable on this)
Despite these two bike being mostly identical (front wheel smaller on RK) they do ride
different.
93 Honda CBR well its still a sportbike but semi upright position lots of fun on ohio 555,
but I am spent by the time I get home 400 miles round trip.
01 Lt same as above but(radio) I am not spent when I get home from 555.

so yeah, hope to have LT again soon.

But in the rare event you have a problem on the road on LT, dealership availability could be an issue. HD dealers seem like they are everywhere.

As I always sayride what you like, if you can afford more great. best tool for the job. butter knife doesnt work as well as a flathead screwdriver. 16K+ on all these last year in 8+ months riding season here
jGood Luck.

Two motorcycles. I ride to work every day here in Northern California. After the first one is paid off, why sell it when you buy another?

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

Total of 5.
2003 K1200 LT
2002 K1200 LT
2004 1150 GSA
2005 650 GS
1993 Yamaha FJ 1200
The 03 LT may be a fixer upper. The yamaha is in need of a slave clutch.
The rest I ride as often as I can.

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

'85 K100 (Hilde)
'02 K1200LT (Wolfie)
(above licensed and insured and ready to ride)

'95 Yamaha Virago 535 (needs some TLC, might use it to entice the GF into being a driver, not just a passenger)

A BMW dealer near me has a t-shirt which says, "How many bikes does someone need? Just one more!". I just HAD to buy that.

BTW: I'm in Michigan, yes, a shorter biking season, but I'm hoping to be able to say "I've had my bike out at least once every month of the year". Had a good day in December, had a good day in January, if we get one in Feb, and I'm quite sure I'll make my goal in 2013.

I'm into multiple vehicles all around. I got my first second car when I was 18, and have had more than one car since 20...currently three on the road, one in the garage.

And then, there's my computer habit...

Nick.

The works "need" and "justify" do not belong in any sentence with "motorcycle". "Want" covers it all.

Re: How many riders own more than one bike?

Currently down to two with the LT and the Valkyrie, but have a chance for a 1981 Honda 650 full dresser with 81 miles on it. So I may end up with 3 or trade my 29 for another bike. Seems I don't even touch any of my cars now that I'm riding again. Two years and about 40K miles and not one minute playing with any of my cars.

02 K1200LTE (103K)
01 Honda Valkyrie (49K)
1998 Goldwing Aspencade (58K)
