Unhappy Double Whammy

I found some oil around the boot on the driveline so I checked it out today. I drained the final drive before I checked to see if it was full. I wish I hadn't done that but I did. Fluid looked okay but how can you tell with Royal Purple? I pulled the boot and it was full of oil. No oil leaking around the front by the tranny. I replaced that seal back in May because I found some oil leaking from the boot going from the tranny to the swingarm. I'll pull it down this weekend and see where it's coming from. I've noticed a little buzz in the pegs in the last couple of weeks. I'm not sure what that is. Hope I find out.
And for the second part, I broke my shifter linkage in an emergency stop after some fool pulled out of a liquor store in front of me on the way home. I barely missed the jerk and he waved at me like he thought it was funny. I wanted to slap him. I rode home 20 miles in second gear. I'm going to replace it with the beefier aftermarket linkage.
This is my second LT. My previous 03 lost a final drive at just over 40K. This 05 LT has just over 37K on it. I'm thinking it's the input shaft this time. I'll have to read up and see what I'm looking at here. I can't believe I got two in a row that laid down on me...........such is life.

Re: Double Whammy

If you have had the FD off previously, make certain that the uni joints at each end of the drive shaft are in phase. If you haven't had the drive shaft out to mark the parts at the spline end, then there is a fair chance the uni joints are out of phase and some vibration may ensue. Process - remove the drive shaft from the gearbox output shaft, mate the 2 parts together with the uni joints in alignment (on the same plane) then use a permenant marker to strike a line along the drive shaft across the sliding spline connection. This line needs to match up when the FD unit is refitted.

Re: Double Whammy

My final drive seems to be OK. The oil is coming from the tranny seal I replaced back in May. I guess I'll have to do it again. Has anyone ever tried to find this seal locally at a bearing place? I'm gonna check it out tomorrow at Purvis Bearing. If not I guess I'll have to order it. I kept my old seal from last time. Removing the swing arm is a pain.................

Re: Double Whammy

You may be able to find the 25x40x6 stock seal, but I have started using a 25x40x7 Timken seal as it is more robust. I get mine at the local Napa store but they have to order it from a jobber. I get 4 at a time for 3.28 ea plus 5.76 in shipping. I have installed two so far and no leaks. The seal itself has the number TC12468 on it and the box has 100117248 on the flap and a bar code on the back 0 53893 50344.

Re: Double Whammy

Thanks for the numbers. I'll check it out today. Purvis Bearing helped me find a FD bearing once. They're very good at locating seals......Thanks again.

Here (clickety click) is a source for those Timkin seals at $2.65 + shipping.

John, Do you have seal sizes for other seals the LT would use for a clutch/seal replacement? I am thinking of ordering a few of each to have on hand in case I ever need them, or in case someone needed one in a hurry. Thanks.

Re: Double Whammy

Not sure about your link Tony as those look like thin metal cased seals. You need a full rubber covered seal for this application.

Front Tranny 20x32x8
slave area seal 17x28x7
shifter input shaft 14x22x5
gear indicator shaft 10x18x6
Those last two may be reversed - hard to tell from the diagram.

Thank you, John.

Looking at the linked-to page, the UPC listed matches the one you supplied above. Maybe just a bad photo, or perhaps a generic image?

Hope so - only one way to find out. Norm Ruest ordered one through his local Napa shop and got the right size but it was a metal bodied seal.
