Battery Clue In.

I've had my '02 LT for about 4 months now and was wondering about batteries, should I have to buy one. Can't I just buy a 12v motorcycle battery from Wal-Mart? Why are batteries made for BMW's so expensive?

Re: Battery Clue In.

Look up ub12220 battery. Has worked for my 02 for a while. Change it out every 2-3 years and you will be fine.

Re: Battery Clue In.

An OE BMW battery is expensive for two reasons. 1: It says "BMW" on it. 2: It's a pretty good battery. Yes, you can get an aftermarket battery. Most of us do. The Odyssey is thought by many to be the best. It is in my opinion, but you may also want to take a look at East Penn Manufacturing. I recently put one of their units in one of my motorcycles.

Re: Battery Clue In.

managed to stuff a 50-N18L-A3 in mine, had to do a bit of massaging to get it in, have always liked to have the largest battery I can possibly fit

Canadian Tire branded probably made by Yuasa (same as Interstate)

There are no batteries made for BMW's. Well, except "BMW" brand batteries.

Any battery that is the same group size and amps will probably work just fine, but generally speaking you get what you pay for.

Odyssey PC 680 seems to be the best of the bunch, I've had mixed results over the years but have one currently that is 7 years old and shows no signs of giving up the ghost. It HAS been on a quality (Yuasa) trickle charger it's entire life when parked.

I'll probably bite the bullet and buy another one when the time comes.

My experience with Walmart batteries has been poor. You pay your money and you take your chances.

Me? I personally HATE being stranded by a cheap battery when for a few bucks more could have bought quality up front.

Re: Battery Clue In.

The original BMW battery in my 03 lasted 8 years. I bought a Odessy PC680 to replace it last year and I belive it will last as long from the comments here and at other web sites. Remember you want a gel battery not a flooded battery. The charging is designed for GEL/AGM .

Re: Battery Clue In.

In the "just for what it's worth" department, I got caught a few years ago out on a week long ride, and my battery failed. I push started it and made it to the next largest town, LaGrande Oregon (where they didn't even know BMW made motorcycles). I pulled into a local motorcycle/atv shop and bought the only battery that physically fit in the bike. It was a MotorCross 12V 14 amp hour battery. Worked fine for the trip. Got the right one when I got home.
