Feedback/Impressions on the 2005 LT

Hi,

I have been away for a while pursuing a couple of other "hobbies". Recently, I have been looking for a K1200LT to get back riding. I have had them in the past, most recently as 2004.

I have a line on a 2005 demo bike from a fairly local Pennsylvania dealer. 750 miles on the clock with the 600 mile service done. Dark Graphite, convenience package, heated seats and grips, cruise, 6 disk, black seat. They are asking $18,200 claiming the bike listed for $20,330.

First, any feedback from you folks on the "newer" LT, good, bad or otherwise?

Second, what should I really be paying for this puppy? I priced a new one and they are looking at $21K plus for a 2006... so I am not sure $18.2K is the right number for a year old bike... (supposed to get the full new bike warrantee)

Lastly, are their any differences 2005-2006 which would make one go with the 2006?

Thanks!!

Joel

Not an expert, but I'm sure others will reply.

With a quick look on FleaBay, looks like some 2005's (some with low miles, but none with under 1000) have sold in the $16k range.

I don't believe that there are any differences between the '05's and '06's.

Generally good things heard about the newer model years. Automatic centerstand is one well liked feature. Also seems like the newer models like the '05's don't have the rear drive issues like some of the older ones.

So work out a better deal with your dealer, buy it and love (ride) the heck out of it!

Good luck,
Tom

I bought my 05 as a demo with 600 miles on it in Dec. 04 for 17,900. Same color with the same package. You're in the ball park, if you like it, buy it.

Wink

I believe the '06 is a 6 speed vs. 5 for the '05. "Yeller" is the best color though!

I hadn't heard that. I looked on the Santa Cruz BMW site, and they both show up as 5 speeds.

One big difference is that the base price of the '05 was $18.8k, while that of the '06 is $21.9k (for whatever value a "base price" comparison is worth).

Actually it is a 5 speed with over drive (5th is overdrive and reverse is one of the original 5). Confused? There was supposed to be a few minor upgrades to the dash functions (stopwatch, dimmable panel lighting) optional HID (lower power than the aftermarket kits). Keep looking for a better used deal.

I would agree with John, keep a look out for a good deal on a used bike. BMW comes with a 3 year/36K mile warranty which is fully transferable and you can get an extended warranty on top of it. I noticed the same bike you looked at on page 2, second from the bottom, of our classified ads for significantly less money. Members here can attest to the ease of shipping if necessary. It has more miles but also more farkles!

Try Cincinnati

Joel,

I was at the dealer in Cincinnati last week and he had two on the floor in the $17K range. You might give it a look. It's not that far from PA and, you could save a couple of grand.

In October I paid $18,900.00 for my '05 and it was loaded with everything including GPS and had 312 miles on it. The guy who originally bought it only two months before me had to let it go because he was waaaay to short to be riding the bike and recognized that early on.

I thought $18,900.00 was fair because with all the options it was going new for over $22,000.00. The way I looked at it, the motorcycle was essentially new and I got the GPS, soft touch seats, convenience package, 6 disc CD, etc all for nothing!

I haven't regretted buying this bike for one moment!!

Joel, I just bought a 2006 LT. When I went to the dealer they had three 2005 models they would give me a good deal on. They also had a charcoal 2006. I opted for a 2006 gray LT which by the way is a beautiful color. The 2006 has the zenon headlight which is totally awsome for night time driving. The colors are nice for the 2006 models too. When my bike arrived it had the new BMW communications system in the bike, it had the wiring for GPS and the tall windshield. The additional GPS wiring cost was 75.00 and the tall shield 125.00. My point is that your going to spend the money anyway and you may as well get the newest LT nicely equipped. My dealer inquired and was told that all the 2006 being shipped now have the com system installed in the bike and I believe it was standard equipment. You might check.

I would encourage you to try and get the 2006 model because you will not be buying as many additional accessories given most 206 models have them included.

Buy the 2005 and enjoy the savings travelin...
I purchased the 2006 because they did not have any more Blue 2005s.
Paid the color I wanted But very happy !
Only difference is the headlite.

I bought my '06 Lt in November '05, so things could be different now, but, the higher windshield, heated seats, and GPS prep definitely were additive to the MSRP I paid. And, there was no comm system installed on the bike. So, in my case, at least, those items sure weren't "standard equipment".

Joel,,, Are you going to keep the bike for awhile??? If it's a long term thing get the 06 then buy an extended warranty before the 3 year runs out....

If your not sure that you'll keep it long cause you like to trade every few years then get the best deal you can on the 05.........regards Pete

Yep - I think it's the K1200GT that has the 6-speed...

I've got a mere 9K miles on my '05... really pleased so far.

I don't know where you live but I saw a used gold 05 for sale at Hermys BMW in Port Clinton, Pa. Don't know much about it except it looks like mine except it has grey seats . It might be worth a phone call.

I love my '05, and for comparison, it is far more enjoyable to ride then was my '99. I bought my '05 as a demo in Tucson, AZ for $16,600 in July of '05 with 800 miles on the clock (600 mile service competed by selling dealer). It was equipped with GPS wiring, convenience & security options.

Smile Don't pay too much. Dealers always want top dollar.

I paid $16,200 in late Feb/March of '05 with only 1,400 miles on my demonstrator. No GPS, no communication sys. I think I did pretty good.
