Refueling flap opening up!

I think we all have this problem especially when riding. It is annoying to keep seeing the flap keep popping out. Several attempts to push it downwards to lock it in place doesn't help. Maybe some folks here can advice on more innovative ways. I will be trying 3M velcro to eradicate this problem.

cheers from Singapore!

Re: Refueling flap opening up!

Do you mean the flap that covers the gas cap? The dealer sells the little clasp insert that hold the flap down. I replaced the one on my LT before I sold it.

Re: Refueling flap opening up!

I had the same problem a couple of times. I found out that there was some dust/sand/grit build up in the little latch mech. I took the blow gun on my air hose and carefully blew into the latch. Then I used some spray lube that is designed not to soften plastic and put a little in there. I then blow it out again and it works for about 2 years before I have to do it again. You can pop the latch out with a very small screwdriver and clean and lube it that way if you want. I found this out by using too much air and the little thing jumped out and shot across the garage. Hope this helps.

Re: Refueling flap opening up!

I used Velcro initially - and it last for a couple of years before it became contaminated and worn out. Epoxied two small magnets in place and it's lasted for 7 years so far..

wondered why they didn't use magnets in the first place.

Re: Refueling flap opening up!

If the Stingray has been off recently, I'd look at the rubber piece that surrounds the Gas Cap and has the hole that the overflow bleeds out of. If that piece is not installed correctly there is pressure on the flap and it is easily to come up.

Just things that I have had to do on mine in the two years I've had it. Guess I have had the Tupperware off maybe 15 times in doing all the mods along with the Jensen 2212 radio fix.

Good luck

Re: Refueling flap opening up!

I had the same problem with mine. The latch was stuck down. A little lube took care of the problem for me. I has been 4 years now and it is still working.

Re: Refueling flap opening up!

Just get some graphite lubricant and spray it in that little catch, then work it in a few times, repeat and you should be good to go. Worked on my LT and my old man's LT; both had the same problem. Might not be a bad idea to lube some of the other points that might be getting stiff like the trunk latch etc.

Talking Re: Refueling flap opening up!

If anyone is looking for a factory direct (OEM) replacement, gas lid latch (female and male) I have done the research and found the originals. It will even come with the male mating part if you ever need it, with out having to replace your gas lid. Let me know if anyone needs one, I sell them for less than half of what the dealer would charge....

Re: Refueling flap opening up!

I took a flat file and filed down the 1/16" ridge on the top of the catch. this allowed the door to go down a slight amount further into the catch. This not only solved the problem but made the door flush with the cover better.

Re: Refueling flap opening up!

I was quoted 27 dollars for this part, possibly wrong pt number. I repaird mine with magnet and small matching piece of steel. Where did you find part for 5 or 6 dollars? Doing 12,000 mi. service. Surprised how dark brake flud is after just over 1 year.

Thanks for all the help from this group.

I never though of magnets. My latch mechanism is broken and this sounds like a nice, simple and (most importantly) cheap solution. So rare for this to happen on this bike.
