Final Drive concern on 2006 LT

Ok, my neighbor who just got a Triumph Rocket III, sent me a link from their forums where a guy was talking about his final drive failure and locking up on him while riding (K1200LT). This resulted in him being in ICU for 4 months and rehap for a year.

Now, I am picking up my new 2006 LT this week in OKC and the last thing I want to have to worry about it FINAL DRIVE FAILURE. Can someone please get me comfortable that this is an old production model problem that has been fixed or did I just pay $20K+ for a seat hicky making machine?

It's awful news. Park the bike now. Send your address, I'll be there within 24 hours to take that piece of junk off your hands. The cost? Nothing if you fill it with fuel before I leave... okay.. I'll give you $100. You drive a hard bargain.

Remember, first come, first served.. I offered the 100 dollars first!

Other things to woory about...

I think what these folks are trying to tell you is that of all the things that can happen to you on a motorcycle: Blind, left turning cages, oily roads, underinflated tires, deer, semis dropping threads, your own speed, wet roads, lack of knowledge, slow speed manuvering, 850# bike, strange dealers, etc. that the odds of a failing FD on your new bike is NOT one of the issues you should be thinking about as you start riding the LT. Enjoy if for awhile, then start worrying!

Neat story --- amazing that with all the members on this site we have not heard this one before .
Yes, there have been final drive failures. At 60,000 miles I'm still waiting for mine--------hopefully I'll still be waiting at 600,000. Just Ride It.

Hasn't this problem been fixed (or made much less likely to happen) beginning in model year '04... or am I dreaming that I read that somewhere?

The final drive failed on my '05, but that was 100% pure human error (another story, previously appearing in threads in your neighborhood). I had plenty of advance notice, beginning with the missing final drive oil fill plug.

I like to think my final drive failure has already happened. Lightning can't strike twice, you know...?

Mr. Farkle problem Donald,

Have you ever heard that old saying “Bad news comes in Threes” ?

Here are the only issues I had with this motorcycle…

Friday Mar 24th departed Austin, Texas at 6am for El Paso to visit my Dad for his birthday. Arriving In Fredericksburg 100 + miles from home I realized my wallet was still in Austin. Panic #1…Now I unload everything looking for wallet…The outside temp warmed up to 28 degrees and not many businesses open yet here in this little German town. The first three stores would not accept an out of town check…especially due to fact I did not have any ID… Finally found a store to accept my check….Yea !

#2) Now I fill up the bike and realized I cannot see? Where are my glasses outside somewhere? …must be in my helmet…Well spent a few minutes tracking down my glasses only to discover the only car that drove by ran over my expensive glasses…So I did my best to write a blind check…..Now I getting Bad thoughts ….what else could happen I have just started out 200 mile in the hole. Turned LT around and head home for my wallet…Now I thinking is it even there?...Or was my wallet stolen ??

#3) About thirty minutes down the highway traveling now at 120 + mph My Radar detector falls off the mount….While I try to slow down and catch the flying object I am blinded by on coming traffic and almost lost my membership to the ZMDC (Zero Motorcycle Down Club)….I survive the around trip to Austin and back to Fredericksburg in record time !

The finial result to my weekend was an A+ …this bike ran triple digits for over 10 hours without any problems… The only issues available on the K1200LT are Human errors…Lesson learned here try not to get too excited when preparing for a 2,000 mile trip over the weekend…It is only the Best Motorcycle Made…Happy!

Do Worry be HAPPY !!

I don't think you will be able to track that story down and find any truth in it,,

Don't worry just keep your rear diff. fluid changed and ride it like you stole it................Regards Pete
