Final drive fluid change

I just changed by final drive fluid for the second time this year. My dealer suggested that with the number of miles on my bike ( 114K ) and since it has not had a failure it would be a good way to check on it more than once a year. Is this necessary and, no I don't buy my fluid from him. If you have a high mileage final drive what is your change schedule?

Marty

Re: Final drive fluid change

I hate to ask, but what is your oil change interval?

Every 6K is the recommended interval for engine and 12K for trans and final drive but I do what Saddleman does and I have 88K on origional drive.

I also use Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil in the trans for smoother shifting.

Transmission fluid as well. I used Red Line Shockproof in gearbox and FD.

Change all of these every 3k miles.

Re: Final drive fluid change

I change mine every other oil change and do my oil changes every 6K miles or thereabouts (sometimes a little more and most times a little less). It works out to be the recommended change of every 12K. I also change my transmission oil when I changed the FD oil. The Magic Carpet has 66K on her. For all three I use regular dino oils meeting specs.

Re: Final drive fluid change

I do the engine & FD every 6000 miles. It only takes ten minutes & little gear oil to do the FD.

Re: Final drive fluid change

If you are concerned about early detection of impending FD problems it is useful to obtain some small clear sample bottles to put some of the FD oil in when it is drained. Label the bottles with Km's/miles and the date. Line them all up along a window sill or in front of an even light source and examine them for colour change. It is possible to see very early onsets by darkening of the oil. The trick though, is to remove the oil from the FD at exactly the same distance travelled intervals to make this test more meaningful.
