Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

I now have enough material to make 15 reinforced 14 mm pivot pin sockets. These sockets will not expand or break when you loosen the pivot pins on the swing arm. The cost of the socket plus the machining will be about $35 ea. I will sell these at my cost plus shipping. I do not need any more sockets for myself so start your own list.

Re: Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

I have seen Dave's reinforced sockets in action. His bikes, my bike, somebody else's bike. They have never failed to remove the pivot pins, damage-free, I might add.

Re: Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

These sockets will take a little longer to make than the 30 mm cut out sockets. The reinforced sleeve is made out of ETD 150 steel & there is machining & honing involved to achieve the high press fit. I ordered 20 sockets today & I have to wait until the 30 mm sockets are done before I can have the pivot pin sockets made. I'm looking at about 3 or 4 weeks for these sockets.

I have a pay-pal account & I'll send everyone the info when they are ready.

Re: Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

Update, I just received the 14mm sockets today (they were on back order) . These are high quality USA made impact sockets. I hope to get the sockets & the reinforcing material dropped off at the machinist this Sunday. I should have a better idea of when they will be ready to ship early next week.

Question Re: Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

Dave, really appreciate your efforts here! Just to be clear though, will you be dropping us PM's if we have already spoken up for one of these 14mm sockets? Or do we need to send you a PM first? Just want to make sure that mine is one of those you are counting.

Tks in advance!

The sockets are done and I'll drop them off for plating on Monday. I'll be at the Boone Rally (my local club rally) this weekend so I won't pick up the sockets until next Monday or Tuesday.

Send a PM with your name & shipping address if I don't have it already & I'll send you payment methods.

Re: Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

I would like to make one of these 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets myself. I work in a machine shop so getting material to machine shouldn't be a problem. I am guessing you start with a 14mm 1/2" drive 6 point impact socket. Should I just true up the outside of the socket and make a sleeve to press fit over the socket? Thats kind of what it looks like from the pictures, but its hard to tell. Can anybody measure the outside diameter of a customized socket so I have idea on what to make? Any other information might be helpful too.

Wow, Dave! I can't believe how everything came out. I never thought the cart would be that clean again!

Great job with the sockets. I'm happy to carry them to CCR for you. Although, you COULD go and carry them up there yourself. I wish things had worked out so you could. Maybe next year in Toadsuck, AR. Ooops! I let the cat outta the bag!

Glad you like it John, I have removed rounded out pivot pins with the reinforced socket.

I'll be doing my first clutch change soon. 167,000 miles on my original clutch. I'm going to ride a few more trips. It's not slipping yet.

When you get ready to do the clutch job be sure to read the valuable info that the Texicans posted about their experience! See here:
http://www.bmwlt.com/files/albums/us...er%20Guide.pdf
It may not be perfect, but it's close enough for me! : ) Almost anyway
.
We used that right along with Clymers and the LT Manual and the only real snag we had was when we went to line up everything to reassemble the gearbox to the clutch/engine the starter splines were just not quite right. We ended up sliding it off and back on multiple times until we finally hit the splines just right! Helps t have 2 people to do the sliding on & off along with those very necessary guide pins (just studs the right thread size!) The clutch output shaft splines are easy to align by turning the drive-shaft as long as you are in 5th gear.

Good Luck with the project Dave!

Re: Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

John,

I found it way simpler to leave everything on the tranny and just disconnect at the connectors. i.e. speed sensor, R-F switches. I did pull off the gear position switch. Have fun.

Wink Re: Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

In hindsight that may have been a good plan, but we didn't really have a problem with the reverse mechanism or switch, thanks to taking plenty of pics prior to dis-assembly so we could see the proper orientation upon re-assembly! But the splines on that little starter just did not want to line up!

Re: Custom 14mm Pivot Pin Sockets

Dave, the 14mm socket is beautiful! The personalization is a very nice touch.

Thanks, Robert
