First Oil Change

Just did my first oil change (2951 miles on oil) .... piece of cake really ... but ... the old oil had a kind of funky smell, almost a burnt smell but that really doesn't do it justice ... I'm assuming the dealer did the fluid change when I bought it with dino oil (cheapest and as this dealer does complete fluid changes on all bikes they take in trade, I'm assuming they use the cheapest) ... I used BMW 15-50 synthetic and the BMW oil filter, o-ring and crush washer. Anyone got any ideas about what could cause the smell? New oil smells like oil ... imagine that ... LOL

Re: First Oil Change

Wouldn't be too concerned about that. That does smell sometimes. If you are concerned about it you could always get an oil analysis done. I'd be a little more concerned about putting synthetic in so soon but that's just me. BTW congrats on dong your own oil change.

Old oil is supposed to smell. However , you need to taste it to really know if it is burnt. Congrats on getting it done by yourself.

The bike has 15,481 miles at oil change ... too soon for Synthetic?

Re: First Oil Change

Fuzzy
I say no. Not too early.
I have an 08RT with 15k and I'm on synthetic now for 2 changes. Quite a few of the RT guys say 18k or 30k or never.
I really don't think it matters.
They used to say, for a bike generally, 6k. To let the valves seat. But many vehicles come today with ... synthetic.
So I say it probably doesn't matter.
Some of the RT guys say stay with non synthetic til the RT quits burning oil. Mine doesn't burn oil, or I would be disappointed.
Maybe mine doesn't burn oil because I went to synthetic soon enough.

no 15K not to soon, it was my bad assumption, first oil change and oil had 2951 miles on it.
