My Lucky Day (and an ABS Story)

Two stories for the price of one here. This morning I was pulling into work for storm spotter training. (This is ironic, just a minute.) I stopped at the gate and as the guard stepped out of the gatehouse, lightning struck a utility pole about 50 feet from my car, opening the line fuse and blowing out the transformer. So, my lucky day. I didn't have to give or receive CPR today.

Now the ABS story. 2000 model with non-linked ABS. A week or so ago I laid the LT down in a gravel drive/ditch. It scratched the lowers and broke the peg mounts. Got it all fixed and back together. Now I have the dreaded slow wig-wag on start-up. I'm pretty sure it worked after the crash when I put it on the trailer, so I'm hoping I pinched the front sensor wire and shorted or cut it when I trailered it. I flushed the brakes and checked the sensor gaps. Battery is good and all connections are tight . Anybody know if there's an in-line connection on that front sensor and the rear one too where I can look for resistance and continuity?

Can't help on the ABS Dean, but glad you escaped injury with the lightning strike. 50 ft, wow, that must have been a hair raising experience and a hell of a crack

Re: My Lucky Day (and an ABS Story)

Yea, it was rather noisy. Second time in my life where it was way too close.

On the ABS I did find where the connections are for the sensors and I hope to get them checked in the next day or two. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Just remember you have to reset this ABS unit even when you fix the fault.

Re: My Lucky Day (and an ABS Story)

Here is a thread from this site which details a way to check and reset the ABS module, maybe you can diagnose your problem before you proceed.
http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthre...ight=ABS+reset

I have not personally used this (yet) however plan to do so soon as I have the dreaded flashing lights, depending on what I find I might remove the bulbs or fix the problem.

Re: My Lucky Day (and an ABS Story)

Alrighty then, I have the dreaded #7 ABS controller fault. Anybody close to Topeka who is willing to reset my ABS code with their GS-911?

Re: My Lucky Day (and an ABS Story)

That same thread also gives you method to rest the unit with out a GS-911. That is a tough one to recover from. I have a board at home but I think it came from a unit with a #7 fault, Curtis sent it to me for parts.

I had a tip over followed by the wig wag lights. Topped off the rear brake reservoir with fluid and the problem went away.

I admit my total ignorance regarding this, but I'm interested in being enlightened. What exactly is the "wig-wag" problem? I haven't run across this in my short time on an LT.

Re: My Lucky Day (and an ABS Story)

Yours is different as you have linked, servo-assisted ABS. The earlier models, primarily 1999 and 2000s have an ABSII system and the wig wag flashing lights means either a low battery indication which will self reset or a fault code which has to be reset. The ABSII system does have one advantage over the servo system in that when the ABS fails on the earlier system the cycle retains full brake capacity minus the ABS. On the servo brakes when the ABS fails, so does about 80 percent of your braking capacity.

The wig wag is also common to the the Integral Brake bike (late 2001 on up) The 2001- 2004 are more prone to it as the monitored resevoirs are more sensitive to fluid level. The 05 and up will get the wig wag when the pads need replacing (fluid level drops far enough to trigger). The wig wag is the general warning light (triangle) and the "brake failure" lights on the dash alternating on and off. Most 05 owners have never seen it.

Re: My Lucky Day (and an ABS Story)

I checked mine last night and also got the #7 code, so does that mean that the ABS controller is gone or just needs to be reset? Just wondering if it is worth it to pay the dealer $50 to reset. If there is a chance that all will be well after doing so I will do it, if on the other hand there is zero chance that a reset will fix the problem, the bulbs are coming out.

Try the reset yourself. That post has all the steps and some good photos around post #53 on how to add the wire to pin 21.

I wasn't really thrilled about the prospect taking a hacksaw to my ABS connector which is the main reason I didn't try that part of the procedure. Maybe tonight I will get a little courage and try it.

Re: My Lucky Day (and an ABS Story)

You're very lucky Dean - ditto on the "hope you bought a lottery ticket" comment. Now as an Aussie living in the US I've never heard of storm spotter training. So I looked it up. And it looks like alot of fun. While I don't have loads of time to spare (job mostly), thanks to your post I'm gonna enroll to see what I can learn.

OK, now back to your regular scheduled ABS programming....
