Question HELP, no audio to helmet speakers.

I gave my 2007 LT a good bath Saturday afternoon in prep for a nice ride on Sunday. Come Sunday, I have no radio and AUX audio to my helmet speakers. Audio to the bike speakerís work and the intercom between two helmets work as well. Additionally, the Garmin audio to the helmet works. The setup is a Voice II with Garmin. I suspect water got into the system and everything worked before the cleaning, but Iím not sure where to start diagnosing the problem Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: HELP, no audio to helmet speakers.

An update and another request for help. A local BMW specialist took off the side panel and indicated that he could not find any problems with connectors or corrosion on any of the connectors. Heís suggesting taking it to a BMW dealer.

Does anybody have any ideas or perhaps can supply a schematic of that VOICE II intercom and radio.

Thank you

If it has had time to dry out - maybe a hard reset will restore the operation. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for 10 minutes. Then reconnect, turn on the key but don't start. Roll the throttle fully open and closed twice then turn off the key. Now try your radio intercomm checks.

Re: HELP, no audio to helmet speakers.

John,

Thanks for the suggestion, but that did not fix it. So, I pulled the side panels and removed the stingray and radio. I went through every connection from the radio, intercom and controller with no sign of problems. However, it was obvious that some water had been in behind the radio where the cables feed into the radio housing. It's strange that the radio works to the speakers, but not to the helmets. And the intercom works between helmets. I'm wondering if there is a dedicated preamp stage in the radio to the intercom that could be at fault.

I suppose on Monday I will call Becker and see if they have any suggestions. Any thoughts?

thanks

OK, since you were in there the little connector embeded in the bigger connector on the lower right (looking at the back of the radio your right) is the tie in of the VOICE intercom to the radio. That may not be fully seated. You can remove it for inspection by pulling the little blue tab in the big connector.

Re: HELP, no audio to helmet speakers.

Thanks again! I've found this site extremely helpful. I had found a jpeg of the pinout of the radio/CD connectors, but in German. After doing a little translation, it became obvious the connector you mentioned is the intercom connection. Continuing, I disassembled the radio and found considerable corrosion around the PC board that the connecter is on and a half a dozen components in the vicinity. I cleaned up everything the best I could with component cleaner, and reassembled, making sure all the connectors were seated. No change, same symptoms.
At this point, my assumption is that there is a failed component in the radio. I also noticed that the CD eject button doesnít seem to work either. I read a posting from another that Becker will rebuild the unit for $400. I call them Monday to inquire about that.
As an aside, in my case, the boot that the radio sits in had collected noticeable water after I washed the bike. That boot doesnít have any kind of drain and the radio is not water tight, so it does not seem surprising that many people have radio problems after exposure to water. On examining the radio during disassembly, it is pretty well constructed, but no radio is going to survive sitting in a bath of waterÖ

Re: HELP, no audio to helmet speakers.

It's fixed

I removed the radio and sent it off to Becker Autosound. They rebuilt it and sent it back the following day After putting everythingl back together, it all works. The only thing is, I'm with one extra screw to the tupperware that I can't determine where it goes....

Re: HELP, no audio to helmet speakers.

There is a special spot for that screw... right in front of the radio in the oddments compartment.
