Stuck Fill Cap

I am performing my first oil change on 99 LT and I am unable to open the oil fill cap. Its stuck and there is very limited space to use the hand to grip a stuck fill cap.

Any recommendations?

Re: Stuck Fill Cap

Use a pair of pliers. The wider the better. Put a rag in the jaws and slowly turn.

Re: Stuck Fill Cap

channel locks or pliers work great. Good idea about the cloth too.

I get mine off with pliers, too. I have a pair of lineman's pliers. The jaw on them is about 3/4 inch wide. They work great.

No mater how little I tighten the oil fill plug I always have to use pliers to remove it.

Re: Stuck Fill Cap

I tried to tighten mine once as lightly as possible. I quit turning as soon as I felt resistance. Rode to work. At some point in the day, I walked out to the parking lot and found oil on the asphalt under the bike where there never had been any before. I found that the filler plug was loose. The resistance I felt wasn't the "stop". With the engine running oil was being pushed out the filler hole. There appeared to be a lot of oil in the lower fairing and on the asphalt, but after checking the sight glass, it wasn't enough that I needed to add any. Now I always make sure the gasket makes contact. When removing it, I always have to use pliers, but pad them with an old rag.
