Fuel filter hose clips - advice please

Just replacing my fuel filter and noted that the original hose clips can be left in place and the filter pulled out of each hose end. The new filter seemed to push right back on with the original clips in place. Is this normal procedure (to leave the original clips as is) or are they replaced with screw type clips at the first filter change. Thanks in advance, Dennis

Hello Dennis,

You must replace the originals with the fuel line specific screw clips. You do not want these connections to come off. The system is under sufficient pressure that can pop a lose connection off which would leave you stranded.

Make sure you use the smooth wall fuel injection style hose clamps only. The size is 5/16. Do not use the serrated type worm clamps.

Re: Fuel filter hose clips - advice please

Not having seen this specific situation, I can only speak in generalities: manufacturers can use spring clips because the hoses they use are new and supple and don't require a lot of tension to seal. Spring clips are great at that point because they're quick, reliable, and don't take any precision to install. Once a hose takes a 'set', it often requires more pressure to re-establish a seal. So you have two options: a hoseclamp which provides a stronger seal, or replacing the hoses, which let you continue to used spring clamps. One drawback with the hose clamps: you can apply enough pressure to deform or crack the thing being attached to.

One guess as to which is cheaper.
