Cee Bailey's Windscreen Choices..

Good morning K1200LT forum,

I have a specific question or two regarding the airflow and wind buffeting for the
rider and more importantly in my case, the passenger. For 6-7 years I have enjoyed the K12 and have been satisfied with the original standard stock screen. My wife however would like more protection from wind buffeting off her helmet (when shield is in highest position). I cannot seem to choose which would be best. I don't think the "wings" model is needed in our case, but I cannot decide which size CB #2 model to go for. I've read many of the other postings, and not much is mentioned regarding the improvment from the passengers perspective. I am 5' 9 and my wife is 5' 8. I always enjoyed riding the K12 solo with the original stock shield all the way down, as I was able to completely see over the shield. I would hate to lose that feature if the CB #2 obstructs my view when in the lowest postion because of the reverse contour shape. Can anyone recommend what they think would be the proper size CB #2 to try ? Another way to describe this is: Does the CB#2 style come up much ( obstrucking my line of sight) higher then the original stock shield if both shields are the same exact size?

Thank you all for any comments and recommendations.

I'm the odd man out here- I use the CB#1+1.5".

Tried the #2 and it didn't work for me.

I took the stock shield and put cardboard on the top (4-6" up) and road with that- cutting it down till I had the height I liked and could see over the way I want. This is the height I got it at...+1.5".

I also got the wings- they make a huge difference.

So how is it for the passenger? Much better. When the screen is just so I can view over it, my wife says it's much better for her.

FYI- I am 6'4" but with only a 30" inseam- so I sit tall. My wife is 5'8". We wear Arai Signet GTR helmets.

The #2 -2.5" matches the stock shield height. Mine's a -2" and is just a hair higher than my old stock shield. I love the shield, as does my wife. All the way up, it does a great job for wind and rain protection. And the shield is so much more clear than the OEM it's not funny.

I recently loaned my shield to Howard Schisler for a week or so and he ordered the #2 -2" with wings.

I put on a CB #2 -3 two years ago.

I'm 6'1" and Suzanne is 5'4". I run solo with it down almost all the way. Love it! There is a large sweet spot that makes her happy up in the last 1/3 of it's range.

One very nice thing about riding two-up, with the shield in the raised position, is the CB is clear and undistorted enough to actually see through it without getting eyestrain or a headache. Something I could never do with the stock screen.

I agree with the group here. Get the #2 -2 or so. I have the #2 in stock height and it's too tall for what my wife and I like. Don't get me wrong, I still love it far more than the stock shield, I just wish it was a little shorter. When I drop it all the way down in the twisties, the top edge is in my line of sight. If I ever need to buy another one I will buy it at least -2.

Good luck!

My '05 stock windshield is 17" tall -- 7" shorter than what Cee Bailey refers to as the "stock" BMW windshield. Be sure to compare apples to apples when you're perusing their site.

Aye, Joe did, indeed, loan me his windshield. What a difference actually seeing and riding with the product made -- it puts things in perspective. I'd encourage you to borrow someone's, or sit on their bike, at a minimum. (Thanks again, Joe.)

I'm not 100% certain that -2" is right for me, but it's what I borrowed from Joe and it worked OK. I had that thing up and down oh, about 300 times between home and Pittsburgh and back. Put it down all the way for the curves, up all the way (looking through the windshield) when it was raining and I was on the interstate. Still didn't keep some of the road spray/rain off my face; full-face helmet is where I'm going next.

I'd LOVE to try different size windshields (and different manufacturers) and maybe even a light gray tint. Attending CCR this year is the way to go, as CB is bringing lots of product with them for testing by attendees. What a great idea!

I did order the #2 w/wings, in order to minimize buffeting and keep winter air off of us. I'll probably go with a #2 without wings for summer riding. A previous thread mentioned that summer riding behind a #2 w/wings can be too hot -- not enough air on you.

CB #2 -2 (so I've been told, but if Joe is right mine might be a -3 since it is 1 inch shorter than stock ) works well for us. I'm 5' 10" and she is 5' 4". We still get some buffeting in strong head and cross winds, but it is great for ordinary riding days.

I am 5'11" and my SO is 5'9". With the CB #2 -2 on my '99 my passenger loved it!!! Didn't have to have it all the way up!
In retrospect I should have bought a #2 -3 or maybe even a #2 -4 as unlike the stock windshield the CB comes higher in the center.
Be aware too of the fact that you may have difficulies raising the shield while going at high speed as it offers more wind resistance and the windshield little motor that could was not designed for that. Then just slow down a bit, raise the shield, and open the throttle again.
I live in So Cal so wings are not a requirement.

I am 5'9" and wife is same I have the #2 with wings at -4 and love it. I see over it very easy and if I raise it up fully it blocks everything.

I've been reading threads like this for the past year. Most people in our size catagory (5'8- 5'10) prefer the #2 -2.

I just picked one off of Ebay for $140 including S+H from someone who thought it was too small.

Good luck!

I wondered who that was! I went back to bid on that but it was already sold. Hope you enjoy it; I would have!

I'll add one comment to those already posted: the degree of reverse contour isn't so great that it changes when you can see over the windshield, IMO.

Thanks all for the valuable comments and suggestions. Looking forward to replacing the original and giving it a good test run through Nova Scotia in June this year.

$240 for a new CB #2 w/wings -2". #2 without wings will be a few dollars less.
