Brake light acting weird

My 99 LT brake lights were staying on. So I stopped by the BMW dealer they checked the lights and told me that the switches were gummed up and they tried to clean the switches. It helped but about two weeks later the rear brake hose sprung a leak so I'm having them (BMW dealer) replace the brake line and at the same time the switches. The mechanic has put the new oem parts on. Now the switches are working but after releasing the brakes the lights stay on but if you tap the brakes again the lights go out. If you repeat it same thing? So what is going on?

Re: Brake light acting weird

He probably did not adjust the new switches correctly. You may be able to fix it your self. On the rear brake switch there is a metal paddle that sits under the stop bolt on the brake pedal. You should be able to press the brake peddle down about a quarter inch (second photo) before you hear a "click" continue on pressing (third photo) then begin to release. It should "click again as you get to that 1/4" area (second photo). If it is not clicking there you need to adjust it until it does. Remove the foot rest plate and loosen the scews that hold the switch and move it until you get that response. This should be done with the key off and in a quite place.

Front switch is a bit harder to get to but you can listen to the click up there and see if it close to the at rest position of the lever. You should be able to pull the lever a good bit before it clicks.

Nice mural on the chrome side plate there John. I don't think mine has one of those.

I will check the adjustment when I get the bike back Friday. Is there anything else that could cause this situation

Re: Brake light acting weird

Consider insisting they finish the job correctly and adjust the switches they replaced.

Also insist that your cruise control work when you pick up your bike, assuming it worked before they brought it in.

If those switches are not set up correctly your CC will NOT work.

Re: Brake light acting weird

Ya know, I can't think of a more welcome mural to have on the side plate of my bike if it was having serious problems! That right there is the look of knowledge, compassion and a willingness to go out in the garage and take pictures to help a brother out!

Re: Brake light acting weird

Well, I hope it's one of the switches and not the relay....It would suck if the problem continued after repacing the switches only to find out it was the relay all along...

Re: Brake light acting weird

I will talk to them tomorrow and find out what they have been doing. My wife and I were down in Louisville Ky where the rear brake started to leak and went to the dealer there. The mechanics tried to fix the problem but didn't have the part so they put it back to gather they spent about 45 min on my bike and they didn't even charge me anything so we bought them lunch for the effort. They were great I wish I could take my LT back there but it's about 4 hours from here.
