Re: 1999 k1200 lt Moronic Control Unit Failure

Sorry for the spelling error, I should have typed Motronic Control Unit, or according to the dealer the ECU (computer). I am looking at a used one but don't really want to go through this again. Should I buy the new one or is this truly rare to happen?

I have not been a BMW owner very long but I did a search on here about Motronic failures and found that they are rare. You can get one used off of e-bay. Saw one on there the other day. They were parting out a lightly recked 02 model. Maybe one of the experienced BMW mechanics on the site will wake up and chime in later today.

Good Luck

Go with a used one, as long as it is guaranteed to be OK.

I have been on these LT sites since '01, and this is the first Motronic failure I have seen spoken of.

The only updates I was aware of was the secondary map (brown wire cut) that came out in late '00, and probably a change in '05 when the power increase came about.

Looks like you have a '99, so may want to get a '01 through '04 for replacement. Sure want to have the secondary map upgrade, and in case the '05 power update likely changed the injector timing, probably stay away from '05 up.
