Red face Can low charge on battery cause problem?

finally putting the beast together again after a tear down maintenance a 2000 - K1200 LT. had the battery tested at the dealer last month for load test they said it's ok. now the question the power drain from the battery all the way down, jump the battery with my charger, bike turn on ok but when I throttle the engine it didnt want to reb up it was bog down can this be because the battery is drain and should the altenator charge up the battery to full again. or should I take the battery to the auto part for full charge want to take care of this before I put fairing back on......

Re: Can low charge on battery cause problem?

You need a trickle charger. The alternator will not bring it back to full charge. A good trickle charger and keeping your battery at full power will save you lots of headaches.........

Re: Can low charge on battery cause problem?

I don't think so. Have you done the TPS reset? I forget the exact procedure but it should be on this site. You may have a loose vacuum line also. That would make it run rough.

If it was me I would buy a battery tender and leave it connected.

If you haven't done the TPS re-set after the battery was disconnected for a few minutes, then that is most likely your problem - as Rattler50 suggested. And take the other advice regarding purchasing a quality battery tender - Deltran makes a good trickle charger and maintainer that you can use at home, anytime the bike is not being ridden. If you don't have a way to test a battery's condition by yourself, then have a shop do it. When you have it fully charged, and re-installed in the bike, then again - do the TPS re-set. BTW, you can remove/replace the battery with the fairing attached.

Re: Can low charge on battery cause problem?

Take the battery some where and get it fully charged up, trickle charger will not do that. Then keep it on a trickel charger to maintain that full charge as much as possible.

Wierd things do happen when the battery is very low. If you jumped the bike and still had a very weak battery it could have well caused this issue you had.

Be ready to replace the battery as most Gel or AGM batteries don't recover well from a full discharge. I have seen Odyssey batteries come back from the dead but most will be damaged if dropped all the way below 10 volts.

Re: Can low charge on battery cause problem?

A trickle charger will charge it and keep it at 12.5 volts. It's a battery charger. If the alternator would keep it at 12.5 volts, you wouldn't need a trickle charger..........

Not from a deep dicharge state - which is not normal operation.

A trickle charger is designed to maintain a charged battery against self discharge. It has circuitry that puts a current into the battery for a time and monitors the charge level. They don't produce enough current to bring a battery back to life following a deep discharge.

The alternator is designed to provide current for the bikes electrical load and to replenish the current drawn from the battery during starting. If you were going to drive for 24 hours straight I suppose the alterator would recharge a deep discharged battery. But that is not practical.

Much better to start with a fully charged battery then use the alternator when running and a trickle charger (or tender) when not riding to maintain that charge.
