Intermittent Headlights

I purchased a real nice 2002 LT a couple of months ago and I am so happy - nicest piece of iron I have ever had! I've been following the forum since purchasing her and this is my first post. In the last week I have been having problems with my headlights- both high and low. The first 1200 miles they worked perfectly, Now, sometimes they both work and other times they don't work at all. Yesterday I ran to the hardware store. On the way to they worked and the way back they didn't. I just got back from a 75 mile ride - no headlights. All the other lights, tail, turn, brake, work great. There is a little lamp in the headlight compartment and it is always on. Even if the lights are not working the high beam indicator always works when I move the switch to the high beam position. She has been upgraded to HID lights. Wiring that I can get to seems OK. I am wondering if there is some other component in the lighting system going (gone) bad.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Re: Intermittent Headlights

Hi Stan,

Like you I'm new to the K1200lt. I've had mine for 6 weeks now and I have experienced the very same problem.

Have a look at this thread and the assosciated links. It will help you to solve your problem. It's all down the earth wires inside the headlight!

Good luck and do enjoy yor new toy! Martin

Could be the grounds but HID draw a lot less current than stock bulbs so not as big an issue. Check any in line fuses as I had an issue with my HID that it would cut out and I would hit a bump and it would come back on. Found corrsion in my in line blade fuse. Cleaned it up and that fixed it.

Re: Intermittent Headlights

Get yourself a long lead and check for supply voltage to your HID unit when it's not working. Go directly to the negative battery post with your meter. If you have voltage then it's in the HID or most likely a broken ground. As john pointed out, check the fuses first. Many of the HIDs are plugged into the original headlamp socket too so that's another potential failure point. Many of the earlier bikes did suffer from a broken ground (brown) wire at the headlamp.
